I did not grow up in this country.
I did grow up in a city; a small island with millions of people. It wasn't horrible. In fact, it was beautiful, and the people were warm, friendly and courteous. Even today it is known as the "Garden City of the Orient". And now there's even a Garden City within the Garden City! I'll post pics later. I've never seen it.
Nonetheless, when I was 15 we went to New York City, after spending several months travelling through Europe (the cities there kinda suck too). Nothing could have prepared me for the shithole that New York City is, and I have seen filth and poverty throughout Asia. Yeah, we travelled a lot. Worse than the filth though, was the human filth – and it began with their thinking. City dwellers have a particular kind of thinking, and cities in the USA are rampant with this kindvof thinking. It is more apparent in US cities than elsewhere. It is people pretending they are alone, in a world by themselves, with absolute contempt for anything perceived as coming from outside that world. Alone in their thoughts, they walked, like zombies along the sidewalk, never looking ANYONE in the eye, afraid of the world out there. When I was caught looking them in the eye they would react violently. Several told me it was rude to look people in the eye in the city. When I asked why they all had the sane story… Evidently, people hate other people in the big cities, and would just as soon pretend they don't exist, except on a superficial level. No depth of meaning or experience between individuals is encouraged or even allowed. All relationships are colored by the fact that they all feel like rats in a cage, distrustful of the other rats.
I don't know where I'm going with this, but I do know that, worldwide, the push to move everyone into the cities, which is still ongoing, is just a way to control the energy-flow of the maximum number of humans in order for a few to capitalize upon the fruits of the labor of many. "Civilization" has both helped and harmed the human animal. We are social animals, and naturally organize ourselves into communities. All social animals that form communities have hierarchies, and there are quite often upsets in the hierarchical balance – but no complex system can withstand the pressures of its own complexity, when the needs of the members of the community are no longer addressed by the beaurocratic nightmare controlling the community.
tl;dr Humans were never meant to live in huge cities. Communities of 77 people or less seems reasonable to me. Everyone feels responsible for the whole community then, responsible for their own behavior, and responsible for the behavior of other members of the community. No one feels responsible for shit in the big cities today, and there is definitely zero sense of "Community".
