Just a.thread for talking about the MX19.1/KDE Respin I just made.

Suffice it to say, '''it works well!"

I'll be uploading it somwhere and linking to it here later today. Been having problems with SourceForge not allowing me to start a project without SMS verification, and it does not like any of the phone number options I've given to it so far! Anyway, I'm busy trying to figure that out, and make some .gifs too, but I'll come back in later and edit this post. It looks like I may need to unspam around here a bit too…

Well, I haven't uploaded it anywhere yet!

But here is an .mp4. Trying to keep the quality as high as I can, get the file size down, turn it into a .gif, and keep it within the specifications for several other sites.

Alrighty Then! Here She Be!

https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-19-1-kde-by-jki/files/

Download, burn to a USB and ENJOY!

Or install it like I have on several machines for friends and family. Or enjoy it on a virtual machine. (use 3D Acceleration and the VMSVGA Setting though.)

Any information you need about this distro you can find at: https://mxlinux.org/.

Their forums are fantastic too: https://forum.mxlinux.org/

They do not in any way endorse this project of mine, nor are they affiliated with it. I just really love the KDE Plasma Desktop, and I really love MX Linux, and this is the newest, upgraded through 2020-02-13, respin I have for y'all!

ENJOY!

>8kun is kinda persnickety about file uploads, so go check out the README for yourself…

I'll write an article about this and post it over at https://just-kiss-it.github.io/u_will/ as soon as I get a spare minute. I REALLY gotta get in there and clean up a lot! I've purposely left out the whole last month of blog posts because a major revamp is again about ready to happen! More on that later…

The problem being that I needed a little patience! It needed time to populate the mirrors.

Bottom Line…

IT WORKS!

Posted an Article about it on my Github Page:

A bit of a kerfluffle over linking to >>>/freedomzine/ on MX Linux Forum, but I edited my post, hopefully before sending too many normies into this hellhole!

It looks like I also started a conversation about whether MX should do a sanctioned MX - KDE version. I will go join the fray to express my opinion. I think it should be left to the community, and that people would benefit by making their own respins anyway, or use one from someone like me.

I did not talk any smack about anyone else's respins, but I've tried 'em (yes, including Mike Jade's); and, well, I put my Personal Respin up on Sourceforge for a reason – it is, in my opinion, the best one being offered by the community.

Thank you for this.

On installed systems do you generally run it using SysV init or `systemd`, and have you noticed any major differences running it either way?

I have run it both ways, and have never had any issues either way, other than there being some things you just can't do without using `systemd`. Also, there are certain hardware issues related to drivers sometimes, like my daughter's drawing tablet – I found some open source drivers, but she has to boot into `systemd` to get full function out of the drawing tablet now.

Thanks for the spin, i have some questions.

1- After remastering i realized that kde-config-sddm installed but sddm is not. I installed it manually. Why ?

2- After i apply "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" and than open MX Package Installer i see upgradable packages(80-100 item) which already up to date. Is this intended ? I don't remember the previous spin i tried. :)

https://ibb.co/NLhJHrD

One example:

Reading package lists…

Building dependency tree…

Reading state information…

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 reinstalled, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Need to get 0 B/1.060 kB of archives.

After this operation, 0 B of additional disk space will be used.

(Reading database … 357256 files and directories currently installed.)

Preparing to unpack …/youtube-dl_2019.09.28-1~mx19+1_all.deb …

Unpacking youtube-dl (2019.09.28-1~mx19+1) over (2019.09.28-1~mx19+1) …

Setting up youtube-dl (2019.09.28-1~mx19+1) …

Processing triggers for man-db (2.8.5-2) …

3- Network manager doesn't connect to the disconnected device again. For example when i enable hotspot on my android device, i enter the password and connect. When i disable and enable hotspot again, it won't even show that WiFi on the list. The only way to connect that connection is opening saved networks -> right click to specific saved network and click on "connect" .

Note that i test it on both persistence enabled and live CD of your snapshot, result is same.

I also checked one of another KDE spin, it works fine. It already works fine on default MX release.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'll try to answer your questions as best I can, but am a bit pressed for time at the moment, and have to do a bit of research and playing around to see if I can even help at all; so check back over the next few days. I actually did install this Respin on an old Gateway PC just this morning and had a weird thing happen where I was unable to sign in, as it refused the definitely correct password! Maybe an SDDM issue? I dunno. I'll be troubleshooting tonight. What I don't know about login managers is a lot!

As for whatever upgrade issues you had, I could not reproduce them myself; but would direct you toward:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/81585/what-is-dist-upgrade-and-why-does-it-upgrade-more-than-upgrade

and

https://www.poftut.com/apt-get-update-upgrade-dist-upgrade-full-upgrade-and-their-similarities-and-diffirencies/

and hope you find something useful in there. Best I can do on short notice. I will say that those recent LibreOffice updates were kinda wonky, and I did have to go at 'em a couple times on several machines, but I'll see if I can reproduce what you're talking about.

As for the Network Manager, I also had problems with getting WiFi to autologin, which I delineated in this Article: https://just-kiss-it.github.io/u_will/mx19-1-kde-by-jki/

>pic related

Mainly though, there are several options for fixing it. I chose one of the ones I found on the Arch Wiki myself:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE_Wallet

I'll come back in later and let you know what else I figure out over the next few days. I may look into providing another Respin for the community soon, with all the little "fixes" built in, so any personal experiences you have to share would help me get that together.

I already purged `Vivaldi`, as it is not open source. I also got rid of `youtube-dl-gui`, because I just don't see a great need for it; but I don't think it's contributing to your problems. I purged `Featherpad` too, but wonder if maybe I went overboard on some o' 'dat purging, and maybe that's why my latest install did not succeed!

I could tell you how I got around some AppImages not working in Debian Buster too, but I'll save that for another time!

Found an old .mp4 I made back in the MX 18.3 / KDE days, from a previous respin! I made a .gif too, but need to do some image organization for sure!
