There's really not a lot of cross pollination with the redbull young driver program. Also verstappen was more heavily eyed by Mercedes and redbull than Ferrari.

I just realized the hidden brilliance in my "2016 Sky opener.webm"
I timed the audio so the "Nico hit me" was after the hat hits him, which meant had to trim the start of the video.
I only now noticed that means that Lewis throwing the hat at Nico got omitted.
And that's exactly what Sky would do!

There was a lot of hubbub before he signed with tr. Half the reason he got promoted into f1 so quickly is because both Mercedes and rb wanted him in their young drivers programs. Mercedes would have put him in dtm, and redbull offered an f1 drive so he went to redbull

To be fair, in theory the new superlicense system should reward up and coming talent. But it so happens that the drivers who spend longer in GP2/F2 and work their way up the order to the superlicense positions have better funding anyways and eventually make it to F1 in their mid-twenties. (see: American Hero Alex Rossi) Meanwhile actually talented people like Frijns get thrown aside due to lack of funding even though they're super eligible. And moreover there simply aren't enough seats even for drivers with top backing like Magnussen and Vandoorne.
meanwhile WEC and IndyCar drivers have the most superlicense points, bravo FIA

Of note: Heuer (the Swiss watch company) was purchased back in the day by TAG (mansour ojjeh's Luxembourg based company; points if you can guess his nationality). They are no longer the same company as LVMH bought heuer from TAG but retained the tag part of the name. Thus tagheuer is playing on the origin of their name despite not having much to do with the tag company (which itself had next to nothing to do with the engines).
Tag electronics (which did the shitty electronics on the McLaren mp4/8) is still part of the original tag company.

The only thing that will excite me in 2016 is if there's an actual battle for the title, i.e. between at least two different teams. What we had in 2014 was a reliability lottery and Nico got plain BTFO this year by the risen one, but there's half a chance Ferrari can fight next season.
Also the 'B Team' thing is pretty overblown, though the lineup was helped by Ferrari having no superlicensed academy drivers. Sucks that it's Shitierrez instead of JEV but could be worse I guess.

I wonder why the spec rules apologists/plebbit-esque love for regulation is so pervasive. I got into motor racing because I loved seeing creative engineering and my favorite manufacturers duking it out with cars that embodied their individual design philosophies. >Froome was a really mediocre rider on a mediocre team (Barloworld)
>Switches to the better-funded and managed Team Sky around five years ago
>Comes out of nowhere to be 2nd in a Grand Tour in 2011
>Could have won the 2012 Tour de France if not for team orders
>Won the 2013 and 2015 editions in dominant fashion (crashed out of 2014)
This happened right after the USADA Reasoned Decision exposing Lance Armstrong & Co's doping so Froome is under extra scrutiny. His story is that he had a parasitic disease holding back his talent that was only treated around the time he joined Sky. Meanwhile the doping conspiracy theorists, freshly vindicated by Lance's fall from grace, are saying the disease story is BS to cover up drug treatments and that Froome is unnaturally powerful on the bike.
Froome and Sky in general had a really rough time at the Tour this year like >>30634 said; his power meter file from 2013 was leaked and they took an unprecedented step by releasing the power data from the 2015 race before it was over (imagine Mercedes releasing their current car's blueprints), but "experts" in the media just used it as evidence of "unnatural" performance stats. So Froome/Sky went and had independent performance tests done with the partial results released yesterday showing he's been on pretty much the same absolute power level since 2007, just he lost weight and that boosted his relative stats to what we see today.
There's a good Arthur C. Clarke quote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." At this point so much more is known about sports science than at the height of doping during the '90s-early 00's that to me it's totally plausible that someone as gifted as Froome is can rival/exceed the ascent times set by dopers in such a way that they're indistinguishable.
This is the source if you're interested, it's a pretty lengthly read.

Just to point out the brits not liking him isn't to do with any doping accusation. A lot of it is to do with his former teammate Sir Bradley Wiggins who is perceived (and frankly is a bit) more likeable and charismatic. There is also his nationality as he is part Kenyan (though Wiggo was born in Belgium) and the fact he rides for Team Sky who aren't particularly liked either.
I take no sides in this (people have) as I prefer track to road (which means I should prefer Wiggins) but Froome has done nothing wrong and doesn't deserve any hate he gets. He has gone out and won emphatically as has Team Sky and those are qualities which aren't a major plus point with the British public. I think he has gone up after his second win mainly because of the frankly atrocious stuff that happened to him but he is never going to win SPOTY for example.

>You have to get people on your side if you are eventually going to sell their data.
Yeah, though 4chan is on a rather downwards spiral. Maybe the new admin will be able to stop the hemorrage, but IMO it's soon to be one of those old ruins of a different internet. Kinda like some forums were back in 4chan's prime, or bulletin boards have been since the late 90s.
Not sure how it's going to be profitable though, because the average chan user is an overweight slightly racist weeb with no job, and I don't think there's anything worthy to sell about this userbase.

Sure the one-lap pace will benefit but I can't see the races changing much. Pirelli wants to bring back 'the cliff' so there will be even more management. Also there's no way around the fact that the cars are 100kg heavier than in 2004, and if they stick with the hybrids while the cars get 20cm wider that'll just go up.

God. Why can't they have tires that last the whole race?
And while we're at it, and with supposedly more efficient engines, why not give them a bit more fuel and remove management altogether in favour of the balls of the man inside the carbon fibre autism tub.

you'd have to mandate a minimum fuel load because currently teams aren't even running the full 100kg in the race, which is where the fuel management comes from

Pirelli has thouroughly proved it cannot do the job of providing two pit stops and exciting racing so the rulemakers need to come up with an alternate way of doing this.

>Pirelli has thouroughly proved it cannot do the job of providing two pit stops and exciting racing so the rulemakers need to come up with an alternate way of doing this.
Yeah, considering this whole thing came about as a sort of happy accident (Canada 2010) the FIA, with FOM encouragement, are trying to manage the excitement of races by replicating those random events that produced good racing. If we look back at the year, the memorable races had nothing to do with cheese tires or any of the other gimmicks. In fact, come to think of it the ones I remember (Malaysia, GB, Hungary, Singapore, USA) were all from weather or Mercedes dropping the ball.
Honestly I was a staunch defender of the formula at first against the loudest complaints (noise, speed, noses) but it's becoming clear to me that the entire hybrid thing is a bad idea. You can allow open development on chassis/aero and you can have the whole power unit token system, but the cost and logistics associated with doing both is such that only works teams can compete right now. Mercedes and Ferrari are going to outstrip the other teams entirely in 2016 (providing one of them doesn't fuck up), and we're going to look back on having the occasional non-works podium placing as a privilege we're enjoying at the moment.
Heavily preaching the the choir here but I've lost faith that the rulemakers-that-be can fix F1. The entire breakaway series idea is worthy but you'd need some sort of FIA competitor set up and that might be a bridge too far. Maybe Bernie will suddenly fall ill and the whole sport will collapse in on itself. Then we can have FZero or something.

Hybrid isn't a bad idea per se.
The V8's were a hybrid and no one complained.

>Hybrid isn't a bad idea per se.The V8's were a hybrid and no one complained.
Hybrids will inherently increase cost of competition and decrease efficiency of any other given powertrain component as money is spent preferentially on the hybrid system for potential gains in efficiency of the whole system.
A lot of us complained then. It is also inherently a betrayal of what f1 is supposed to be in that it is an illegal second engine in the car, and one that is partially automated.
What grinds my gears the most is that if f1 is deregulated and tires are deregulated, different design directions will be chosen and different tires and tire strategies will be selected and altered to synergize with that. As teams chase returns in multiple categories, components will be pushed to their limit and you will see lockups and variable tire wear, and more unreliability that is tied to performance (as opposed to now when the engine fail regardless of how hard they're being pushed)

With restricted development, teams just spend more on fewer things, and teams spend *more* on engine development as they cannot try things out in testing because of limited testing and the token system, so they must extensively dyno test every possible upgrade and decide which one is most worth the limited tokens. More expensive not less.

Additionally, the more all motorsport series are deregulated, the cheaper all motorsport will get due to economies of scale, shared parts, and greater exchange of know how. IMSA Gtp is a great example of this.

When I was about 14 or so, my family was visiting relatives, and I ended up talking to a cousin who was 10+ years older than me, and F1 came up.
He had seen pictures of the new McLaren F1 2-seater, and legitimately believed they were going to use it in the race, and could not be convinced otherwise…

The rules state the teams must choose and inform the FIA 14 weeks before oversea races and 8 weeks from Europe races. Only 2 weeks before the races do the choices get revealed and I doubt Pirelli needed 14 weeks lead in time to do the old set of tyres for each race. Didn't they change compount in less then a week after Silverstone 2013?

Because a single tyre manufacturer is so much easier to control and gives them that warm feeling they get when they hold all the chess pieces.
Also if anything goes wrong they can put all of the blame on them.
Also casual fans/Crofty would just complain that their favourite driver/Lewis didn't win because the other team had tyres from another manufacturer which they were partnered with which are clearly superior.
They would never shut up about it and would always say that if the two teams had equal tyres that their driver would be the clear champion.
Every comment would always be how those championships were unfairly won and they would stay up late to edit wiki pages with * next to the 'fake' championships.
They don't see the parallels with the current engines. They want a clear advantage for their drivers team and then everything equal behind so they can autistically rank everyone and put them in "the correct order" but with their driver at the top in his 'rightful and hard earned place'.

You're right. The casuals are going to be retarded no matter what. That said, tires are tires, for years goodyears and michelins and sometimes dunlops and pirellis went up against each other. There weren't huge differences except that when Michelin started fielding radial tires (late 70s) those had a pretty good boost in average life. Of course it took little time for the others to catch up. Pirelli were just kind of retarded most of the time and made cheaper tires for teams that couldn't get the others (still a better result than those teams not racing) eventually they got their tires to be good in high heat (1982 France, 1989 Hungary, 1990 us gp) and when they partnered with Benetton, the 1991 pirellis usually lasted longer so the benettons had more flexibility in race strategy.
Barring Mosley era retardation (2005 Bridgestone controversy) tires have mostly been a behind the scenes thing that worked well enough.

Maybe it is because it is nearly midnight but why do the teams have to pay Pirelli for tyres when Pirelli has an exclusive contract with F1?
That does not make sense. The teams can't compete without tyres but they can only use Pirelli's.
Surely the right to be exclusive and the amount of money they paid means they can not charge for tyres. Does this not break some EU law?

How about you go spend nearly half a billion BuxtonBucks a year, only to be let down by an engine manufacturer that showed up in 2015 with an engine EVEN WORSE than their 2014 engine, and see how "sporting" you are.
Then he goes on to criticize Horner for blaming Renault for their "85% of their 2015 problems", while not giving Renaut enough credit for their world championships.
Yeah, because an engine in the previous aero dominated formula, was just as crucial to success as they are in the current engine dominated formula…

>he story comes from some Ron Dennis quotes that have been extrapolated to a crazy extent by a website that has a habit of making huge guesses and then forgetting the guesses that don’t work out. We could all do this, but what’s the point? People eventually work out that it is all guesswork and they then trust the source less and ultimately they don’t bother to visit anymore, no matter how thrilling the headline may sound. So why would a website owner waste all that effort? Why not try to do the job properly and get off one’s backside and go to some races and try to become a credible F1 source, rather than a bottom-feeder? Of course it’s hard to do it, which is why only the best make it.

What I am asking you is, why do you hate the right? You think I am new but I have been coming here during the entire 2015 season and the last of '14. I'm just wondering why you hate people on the right so much. Are you an extreme leftist or just someone who hates politics in general? That's all I am wondering.
