Pirelli are negotiating a new contract and he comes and openly criticises them.
The brain dead fans will flock to any driver who dares to step out of line and swear in an interview and it makes Pirelli's position uncomfortable.

Tires aren't meant to explode, without warning, before they run out of grip. Vettel was less than a second off Romains pace, so they hadn't "fallen off the cliff" to indicate they were done.
Even ignoring that, Pirelli told the teams they were good for 40 laps, and it exploded after 27.
I think people are very unfair to Pirelli.
They're only doing what has been asked of them.
Making tires that last various distances, while having various grip, is a lot harder than just making a tire last an entire race.
But today was a failure, nothing else.

A tyre just giving away randomly on car with a driver who has spent the whole race jumping over the kerbs seems to me to indicate a slow puncture.
I'm more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and wait for an investigation from them into what happened to the tyre.
Though Hembrey was an idiot for making any sort of comment to the media before having the facts.
And Pirelli should try their hardest to get as much testing as they can from the teams so they can better understand their tyres and try and get the rules changed to whatever would better suit them.

And at this particular round they installed a number of new kerbs, some of them during the weekend.
In the end we wouldn't be having any problems if Pirelli were able to do tyre tests without the teams complaining about the costs of running. No manufacturer has ever had this lack of testing.
It is a fucking stupid situation where we tell a tyre manufacturer to produce a set of made to degrade tyres and then effectively ban them from testing said tyres.
At Paul Ricard they could test new wet weather tyres, effects of different kerbing, more compounds & different sidewall designs but they can't because Sauber, Lotus and Force India kick up a fucking storm.

Returning to semi related F1 news, the traffic to Calais is absolutely mental with 3-6 hour delays blocking just about everyone.
Jenson was pretty lucky with that flight out.

A lot of people said Vettel overreacted when he cracked the shits at Pirelli, and said that if the tire had have blown 200m earlier at Radillion he could have been seriously injured.
But I just had a thought…
I think his reaction is due to what happened the last time he crashed there.
Back in 2005, driving a WSR car, he spun at Radillion, went in the wall, and had the tip of his finger sliced off in the accident, requiring it to be surgically reattached.

Well I mentioned getting rid of DRS in here a couple months ago and every response was "muh overtakes". If the aero is good enough to get a proper slipstream off the car ahead of you, you won't need DRS, sure the overtakes might go down in quantity but the quality will be a lot better. I personally would rather see a 2+ lap long overtake battle than a .5 second overtake in a DRS zone.

The more complex the wing is, the more it's affected by dirty air.
People seem to forget that the "overtaking working group" introduced the tall skinny rear wing, wider front wing, and adjustable front wing (yes, front wing, not rear) because there was often ZERO on-track overtakes in many races.
DRS came along later, and is a cancer and needs to go, but wings easily affected by turbulence aren't the answer.
What F1 really needs, is to look at ChampCar aero. They could run practically nose to tail with fuck all loss due to dirty air.

It just gives me terminal diseases to see that they're legislating the designs instead of just returning to a rule set that did not entirely on aero.
The mid 2000s (no overtakeslol) issues stemmed from the grooved tires (reduced cornering speeds), reduced wing and tire width (reduced cornering speeds and design flexibility), overregulation of the engine formula (meaning that any increase in speed will come from the wind tunnel and nowhere else), and allowance of electronic drivers aids (like two way telemetry and traction control) which meant that a driver's mistakes no longer meant a loss of track position.
I really hope this board is smart enough to understand that. 99% of the fucking motorsport centric internet says "this is bad, but if we just add my one simple rule it will be better". Driving me nuts. This shit with the fia and the "overtaking group" reworking the super complicated rules every few years is *not* to improve it, its because the rules dont work, but the team order gets shaken up by the rule changes.

There is absolutely no hope for that engine in the future, given that the current formula doesn't allow any developement.
Even so, usually when an engine is first introduced, they have historically been fast but unreliable.
The DFV could win races in the 60s
Renault could win races in the 80s
Mercedes had a fairly tight package when they introduced their engines in the 90s
And Williams' BMW engines were also fast when they worked.
With these new Honda engines, the power train doesn't seem to function reliably at all ,and when it does, it barely musters a 14th place.

Indycar awards points practically for showing up in order to show big numbers and give the illusion of a close field. A spec series isn't even fair as drivers drive differently, and a teams best assets aren't necessarily leveraged by changing aero balance on a dallara.

There were different flavors of cosworth dfv back in the day. Just because you had a dfv in the car, didnt mean you had the same engine as everyone else with the ford badged engine.
There were aftermarket suppliers so to speak for the dfv. You could get a dfv from cosworth, or Nicholson-McLaren, or Heini Mader, or a few other companies, each with their own twist. Can anyone think of any more companies that did this?
