All the really good shit needs story, from vanilla romance to corruption and rape. Sure, you could do para play over chat, but that takes up a huge chunk of time just waiting to properly cook a post that lets you dwell on emotion and sensation while moving the scene forward. Like any other hobby, you get out of ERP what you put into ERP, and notes let you put a lot more into each individual exchange.
That said, it isn't infallible. Due to the long-term form of play it's vulnerable to getting swept aside with other hobbies when outside circumstances and obligations come calling. Its flexibility in scheduling is also its weakness. Most people prefer to use chat so they have the immediate guarantee of presence and attention as opposed to the waiting and ease of distraction that comes from notes.
Notes work for me specifically because of all the distractions throughout a day. I might be able to devote several hours to play. I might only be able to pop in for one or less. None of the participants have to waste time or set aside excess time for each other.

I can't get off without story. I don't enjoy smut on its own at all, I need a convoluted narrative. 90% of my fetishes are context dependent. I can't just enjoy seeing one thing, I need it to have an entire story around it.

I've had multiple story RPs that lasted 3 years and others that lasted over a year but not quite that long. I have novel+ length logs from them that I can reread when tired/bored.
The big failures happen when something IRL blindsides a player. My sex drive died entirely with a death in the family for a long time, for example. I need to travel often for reasons and that can also impact my ability to do long form RP.
I am happy with notes or chat RP. I have different preferences depending on the situation I'm dealing with IRL. Chat is good if I'm at the computer for 3+ hours, notes are good if we both aren't at the computer at the same time for a long time. Being able to plan in chat is good though, I like to be able to have chat conversations.
I do like to befriend my partners eventually if we are compatible as friends. It's fun picking the brains of people with similar kinks because we have come up with some very impressive stories and worlds together. Having a custom world with a fun, wild story really adds to my pleasure.
These days I almost exclusively play as vulnerable teen girls opposite older men. I like long noncon to con plots.

Same. For me, story or even just build up to the lewd really enhances things. I see it as something like show don't tell. For example, what if you wanted to do a scene where two people are going to have angry sex. Instead of just jumping right in, maybe both characters start out as calm or only one of them is mad. You get to actually play out that anger and trying to direct it into something.
Also, I could be wrong on this, but I tend to find people that prioritize story with lewd or even building up to the lewd to be higher quality than people that just want to play out their fetish as fast as possible.

Story adds a lot. Honestly, pretty much the only time I'll go straight to smut now is if I'm with someone I know and we're both using characters we've already established. The fastest I'll get into a scene with someone new will still involve at least 2 or 3 posts back and forth to add some context as a bare minimum. Story adds to the smut so much that I think it's almost boring without it.

This might be a good thread to bring something up. What kinks do any of you anons like from a nonsexual perspective?
For me, stuff like blackmail falls under that category. Even though I don't get anything sexual out of it, I enjoy it from a writing or storytelling standpoint. How far is the person doing the blackmailing willing to go to get their way? Just how much is the person getting blackmailed able to take? Is the blackmailer willing to back off a little or offer any concessions? Could the person being blackmailed choose to defy their blackmailer? It's something that I think is interesting to play around with.

I don't necessarily love story *over* smut, but I definitely do feel like it's necessary to enjoy the latter to the fullest. I like to examine characters most of all, whether that's in the form of a developing love, a shift in personality, gradual destruction/wearing down in a darker themed RP, etc.

Speaking of, I've been looking for a partner interested in doing a noteplay lately, or even something on the board here or over email. A situation where both myself and a partner are comfortable simply replying whenever we have time. Some days there might be hours of back and forth, other times it might be 1 post every 2 or 3 days.
If anyone's up for that kind of play, I'm mostly thinking about something a little darker at the moment - maybe an abduction and rape that can gradually lead into Stockholm Syndrome, or I could play both a victim and a willing partner to any would-be criminals. I usually prefer to play female characters, but I'm open to other options.
