First, the very least make your avatar a logo/symbol/etc representative of your character (i.e the tattoo that allows a mage to cast) or, if you’re REALLY that adamant about having no images whatsoever, blank (i.e a transparent square). The default abomination has the power to make you look like you put 2 minutes of effort into your profile even if you have 2 million eloquent, interestingly read words.
As for non-image design, I’d abuse indent tags and their effects on collapses and stagger the widths a little, with plenty of box building unicode and relevant illustrative ones. If you don’t have a layout bone in your body or want a starting point, there’s always Profile Templates, Profile Layouts, and their linked “affiliates.” I strongly recommend customizing them at least a little so that you don’t run the risk of being a carbon copy of 12 other chucklefucks. And don’t use completely unformatted text or a stack of left aligned collapses. You (general you) might think your writing is enough, but it’s not. It never is.

If you "don't have a layout bone in your body," get one. This is an exercise in your ability to be pretty without pictures, and f-list gives you some tools still to do that. Learn it. I have gotten help from this board before. I've followed that advice. Last year I made a profile I had a lot of hopes for. I used my own artwork because it was original, it was digital, colored, and much, much better than shitty pencil drawings on notebook paper by some emo fag. I was so, so excited to play this guy. Ya'll didn't have anything positive to say about it, what I thought was decent art wasn't good enough for this board's standards, I was told my character was boring, that no one would have the patience for it. Thing is, I had a lot of experience as an F-List DM, and that character was designed to be an ultimate PC in my own eyes, by my own standards. And I never got any replies. No one wanted to DM for me. I would have to change virtually everything to impress this board, and I did not want to compromise so much, because that would admit that I'm some autistic sperg incapable of finding common ground with a community I desperately want to be a part of, but seem to only find reasons to hate. The list of No's I had in my last profile was enormous. I had my latest profile blocked because of the salt I put into my custom kinks. Now I'm back to square one with no idea where I want to go or what I want to do. I'm so sick of playing pinks and harems. I'm so sick of group chat banter between retarded furries and barely literate weebs. I suppose the cynicism and hard standards of this board are honest and true, and its time I realize that either I should leave this hobby, or sober up and make compromises. That means using artwork that doesn't resemble the character in my head. That means putting up with fetishes I don't enjoy just to keep a partner's attention. That means learning Photoshop skills to make fancy ass Inlines. That means combing through font libraries to make fancy custom kinks. That means constantly making tweaks and fixes to said profile just to make it slightly more perfect. Is there some unwritten rule that all F-List reference art must use smooth lines drawn digitally? Is it harder to jack off on "rough" looking art? I think there's a real discussion to be had here. Corto Maltese called himself "an old hand" in his first volume, Ballad of the Salt Sea, and was drawn with lots and lots of lines under his eyes and around his mouth. I really liked that about him– you could tell he's spent a lot of time under the sun, his hands callused and gnarled, his skin a deep tan, and his voice rough from chain smoking charutes. What I found appealing about the character in the books is not present in your profile, so why even use the name?

Hugo Pratt's style is definitely very unique and wonderful on its own way, but I wanted to play a younger Corto before he grows into the grizzled sailor of later volumes. Fanart is the only place where I have found him that way. I think we had this talk before, but I did have the first version of the profile far more true to what's shown in the books. I got little to no play, so I ended up doing changes here and there until I ended with more of an OC than a canon. I ended up hooking people more like that. And I only keep the name because I love how it rolls off the tongue. If you want to make your profile about him I wouldn't be opposed to passing it to you, though.
Pratt also did art for a very good Argentinian writter called Oesterheld who did wrote novels about an American soldier called Sargent Kirk who fights against indians. Also look up The Desert Scorpions, they are his best work after Corto Maltes.

The SUPER TL'DR is, the galaxy at large is a backdrop and the main focus is on the ship and the daily life and adventures of the crew. If you can do that kind of RP, you're good to go and all the stuff about space wizards with laser swords can come in later.
Also, the Empire was a human only entity in their original incarnation, no aliens allowed in the military or government, barring a few rare exceptions. In my setting, that stance has been relaxed a bit, but not much, and there are still plenty of old guards who still look down on alien cadets and military personnel. So hey, if you want to make a crew member who is still very much "Aliens don't belong" that could be fun.
Also, fuck I need to make a tab that explains the regulations regarding the comfort duties of the female staff on the ship. The captain has that tightly regulated.

Customs are really good. It's going to sound like terrible advice, because I can't think of a better way to say "you should add some," but you should add some customs related to kinks you really like. Take ear play for example, a kink under your favorites section. Now of course you could just leave it as just a basic kink, but what if you added a custom kink for ear play? Also keep the regular ear play kink so that other players can find you through searching. What if you stated how much you like ear play or how much your character will like it? How about what you want to do in regards to ear play? If you do that, it gives you opportunities to either reveal more information about your character without stating it in the main bio and/or tell other players what you really like.
