I've found that, maybe moreso than any other niche, a proper multi-session RP that focuses on playing out the development of romantic affections between characters is really hard to find. I lost my interest in pure typefucking years ago and now the only lewd stuff I really enjoy is something with a lot of rich emotional stuff going on with it, so that's basically all I shoot for on any of my characters.
Anyone else feel this way? What sort of partners do you go for? Do you just go for the initial courtship, or do you also try to play out them starting a family together? What's your favorite part of these RPs? Had much success with finding partners? What do you think is your motive for really wanting to RP this?

I love romance-focused RPs whether it's an RP where the sole focus is hooking two characters together, or a long term one where one character is trying to win over an unlikely partner. But I'm also a huge sucker for grand, stupid and often even cliche romantic scenes and actions so I find it really fun just to lean into the whole set-up of it all. My usual preference for romance-focused scenes tend to be female characters, if just because there's something about purple names that make most people think they're just there for sex and nothing else.

I really like starting families in RPs. Most of my male characters are family men for this reason. It's really satisfying to see my character to go from selfish jerk to protective, giving father. It takes a lot of investment and chemistry, however.

I've never been in love, so I don't even know what it's like to be in a committed relationship for more than a few months. From the outside it looks like doing a bunch of favors for one person only to be accused of things you didn't do. Lots of arguing, bitterness, and resentment. The idea of a person being infatuated with another sounds nice, but boring. I only play polyamorous characters. Monogamy is gay as fuck.

I've been in love (albeit unreciprocated) but never in a relationship. I think if you're looking at love as a hedonic calculus you're already fucking up. You need to have a somewhat spiritual and sacrificial attitude towards it - you are both giving yourselves to one another because you wish to care for and protect each each other, and also create something together that will ultimately give you far more happiness than a bit of hedonism.
To be fair I've got bad mommy issues and didn't grow up in a stable environment, so maybe my strong desire for a lifelong monogamous relationship and a family is fed by that.

I also want to find some RP like this where it's a few sessions, the characters are either just meeting or reencounter each other after a long time. Although my thing is more that there tend to be adventures or some kind of quest and soon after, it starts cute, gets hot and heavy. Some sweet romance, wild rough wall crushing love, some angry makeup sex, and other stuff as the two become more of a couple even if they get really frustrated with another at some point. One if not both are a mythical creature, alien, super-powered or human hybrid of some sort. It swings from story heavy to sex heavy and back, depending.
I've contemplated "what if" regarding kids of the characters but never did it. It's just the hero/heroine on adventures and enjoying each other when and where they can.

Interesting that this thread got revived, but it's always something good to talk about.
I feel as though genuine romance for is… difficult to measure? I think there have been two, maybe three that immediately come to mind as my best in terms of romance. I feel as though a lot of it has to do with dialogue for me. I've found that the two best people who did it were playing more refined characters who spoke less like they belonged in real life and more like someone you might find at an upper-class dinner party is how I might put it best. Though, they were also leaning more towards the fantasy side.
The big common denominator, to me at least, was generally how they referred to my character. It's really weird, but something about how they do it makes it feel all the more genuine as a result.

I don't tend to make a big deal out of it myself. I feel like you can't force the genuine bit. It just sorta depends on the other partner. But, in my experience, they start with "My" but don't use "My love." For example, I've found being "My Lord" or "My husband" are my personal favourites. Understand a little, anon?
I will note, I think part of my own autism for it comes from how cliché saying things like "I love you." are. Because it's so cliché, even if it is a common thing to say, it feels less genuine as a result. This is doubly true for pre-established relationships, but it may also come down to partner quality. I should also note that I almost never play modern because my experiences playing modern are almost always shit.

So here's my big problem with romance RPs; they're not smutty enough.
I love romantic RPs. I adore long, sweet, emotional romances. Especially if it's between two feminine characters.
But in my experience, people who like to play cute girls doing cute, romantic things typically don't like to spice it up with degenerate smut. When will I find my RP waifu who loves both heart-felt romance and being horrifically violated in every possible way?
