any dogbro doomers here?

i think dogs can be the best kind of friend a doomer who can afford one can have. dogs are not corrupted like the humans if that makes sense. Artificial selection has caused dogs to become the most empathetic domesticated animal for humans.

also it feels good to feel like i make at least some tiny difference since i adopted mine from the street when she was sick dying

My family treated my dog like shit, I kept telling my mother to stop making her angry (that thing people do where they put their feet close to the dog's food so they get angry and start eating), she would just laugh, she eventually developed sudden attacks where she would scream loudly and then become unable to move. I'm almost sure it was their fault, they also never took her to the vet. I was just as guilty, I may have been like 11 to 17 when we had her, but I could've been more direct with my family and told them to fuck off and take care of the dog like it should be done. I hadn't had a dog for myself ever since.

Sadly very usual for people to be shitty towards animals.

I hope the dog didn't have more problems

I also adopted one from the street but she is very old now. The second one I have was my grandmother's dog so I took her too after she died. Dogs are really nice beings and they feel a lot of stuff too. But I guess, soon both of my dogs will be gone and then I don't know. It was always like this. Parents got two dogs when we moved to countryside first time, long time ago, just because people wanted to kill them (unwanted puppies), etc. I never truly intended to have a dog but I always ended up with one or few since I was kid. If I would live in city I would never have a dog, imagine having him locked up whole day and going out just for a brief walks, that's something different than having big garden for them.

it's always sad when it happens but if you go for stupid coping mechanisms like me you should instead mourn properly because if not it can leave lasting shitty feels.

i once adopted a puppy without a mother and looked after him for a few weeks but he got cdv and i started treatment, when he started screaming in pain and it was just gerting worse i had to euthanize him.

i usually can't look at things on the bright side but the thing that comforts me a little is if i never looked after him it was going to be so much worse for him.

My family would try their hands at having a dog plenty of times, even though they didn't have the money for it, didn't know how to raise one, and would constantly find things to complain about that would have been obvious when getting a dog, like having to vacuum more often because of the hairs.

They would eventually just give it away once they got bored of it. This happened at least four times, I honestly lost count.

I'm just glad they stopped that bullshit, because I felt bad for the dogs. They deserve a family that can and knows how to care for them.

I might get a dog once I finally live on my own.

I don't know. tbh I cried when that dog from street went deaf recently and I'm pretty much just waiting until she will be gone but at least she has good place to be around, outside on sun. Shit happens, some things you can't change.

>if i never looked after him it was going to be so much worse for him

Maybe this. This one I'm talking about now, when I got her, vet said she was def tortured and also skinny. Until this day that dog has panic fear of water, so only god knows what people who got her before did to her.

i heard there are almost no strays in the netherlands, that's good for the dogs but probably also means it is more expensive to care for one? i'm not sure.

it's good you're not rushing because that might be the exact reason your family gave them away – just adds mire responsibility to life

I'm not sure how expensive it is honestly. I guess Vet costs could be high, but beyond that I don't think it's too expensive comparatively.

It's probably more because everything is so densely populated. Stray dogs would stand out quite a bit and so would pretty quickly be taken in by shelters or places like that.

That's what I imagine anyway.

And yeah, they just kept seeing cute puppy eyes and only started thinking about the "negatives" when they presented themselves. They just didn't learn after the first or second pet.

I have a ~22 kilo dog which eats about $125 worth of food a month (dry food and table scraps, I buy the best dog food available in my area, you could spend $60 instead of $125) Vet costs are about $300 when you first get the dog and then another $150 every year or so when you get vaccines updated. I only give my dog flea medicine when she gets fleas.

Get the dog young (8-12 weeks) and they will really bond well with you and be very trainable. Meet the dog before you buy it, some dogs are just nasty, you want a friendly puppy. If all you do is sit inside all day and smoke indoors, that isn't a good environment for a dog. Only get one if you are willing to put in a serious amount of time. The first six months you have a puppy you are looking at 4 hours a day of training, after that, 2 hours a day minimum.

My pupper is nine years young. I couldn't ask for a better friend or attentive guard dog. There are a lot of greasy injuns around here who steal anything that isn't bolted down. She gives warning bites on the ankles and wrist to anyone who wanders in that she doesn't trust (I own a scrap yard). She isn't fixed and I would like to breed her, but all attempts made have ended up with the males whimpering and rolling over on their backs.

It rained for the first time this spring so she went rolling around in the mud this morning. I have the front door set up so she can open it. She stays inside at night because the coyotes are bad here. A farmer in his eighties down the road lost his male German Shepard last year to them. I have to go bathe her before sundown and mosquitoes get too bad.
