<I recall the Return of Bruce Wayne, follows directly on from Final Crisis (How Bruce Wayne/Batman got sent back in time) and the ideas that deals with are subsequently picked up on in Dark Nights Metal.
I can appreciate not wanting to read a whole swathe of ancillary material but the story of Dark Nights Death Metal follows directly from Year of The Villain which is essential reading if you want the context. I will not spoil anything.
Also, I would suggest reading The Batman Who Laughs which introduces The Grim Knight- a Dark Multiverse iteration of Batman which is more like The Punisher.
He was so good that he managed to put villains down before they became a problem.

I don't like The Batman Who Laughs spin-off. It was utter trash to me, and was the beginning of the arc's flaws: The Batman Who Laugh's massive plot armor, which always makes him win at the end.
The only thing I liked about it was the return of New 52s Bat-robot. But the Grim Knight for example, what a stupid character. And it's getting kinda repetative with the Batmen. Grim Knight is basically a more edgy Thomas Wayne Batman.

Yes. All that insane shit is actually set up in other comics. Including Manhatten Wally West. Which leads to evil Manhatten Batman, who's a minion of the Batman Who Laughs.
It's so weird, basically anything they come up with can instantly appear as an evil, dark universe version… well… until Batman Who Laughs is killed at least.
