Are the He-Man cartoons worth going back and watching? Were they actually good to begin with or is the love for the character mostly nostalgia?

Skeletor alone makes it worth watching, and even some episodes without him have their own charm.

He-Man is in the same position as Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog where the villain is really the only worthy part of the show. That and memes.

2002 was less comedic and goofy, but handled the action and adventure nicely.
Most importantly despite the slight shift in tone Skeletor still felt like Skeletor.

you weren't kidding, damn near every frame is unintentionally hilarious, and when it's not it's just nice to appreciate the actual art that went into the show.
I'm liking this a lot more than I thought I would. Are there any other shows from the 80's to early 90's that are worth checking out. I'm thinking I might also go for ThunderCats and Silverhawks.

>Are there any other shows from the 80's to early 90's that are worth checking out
Thundercats is gold in spite of its poor vocal pacing. Silverhawks is great in concept but I didn't particularly care for the execution when I saw it on Toonami. I should give it another try
GI Joe: Cobra Commander is a genius and occasionally shown to be redpilled. His plans include the likes of destroying the nation's paper money and putting us back on the gold standard, hijacking TV to create a false narrative, etc. And then there's the occasional idiot plot as well (dinosaurs!). Always entertaining. Being Shipwreck is suffering
Transformers: watching G1 you could sometimes swear that Starscream is an autobot spy. Memorable heroes and villains, and the writers are occasionally amazing (in the season 1 closer, Megatron forces Optimus to compromise his morality. Shit like that). Season 2 and 3 are hit & miss (especially season 3) but have their charm. Try not to let the movie make you cry
Transformers - Beast Wars acts as a sequel series and is exceptional
Jem and the Holograms (embed related): okay, hear me out–yes it was targeted at girls, that happens with good things sometimes. The heroines are hot, the nemeses are hot, the music's glam rock, the plot occasionally throws around real world money values (not so you can entertain the fantasy of being a millionaire, but so you understand what's actually at stake in the music industry) and you can usually count on some pretty decent drama.
The Misfits undergo some subtle but surprising character development (for example, Pizzazz starts out a rich bitch daddy's girl but finds financial independence to her liking)
pity about the comics and live-action movie
Pirates of Dark Water: Do you like adventure? Of course you do. Do you like pirates? Of course you do. Do you like heavy metal fantasy worlds with improbable physics? Damn straight you do.
Episodes get weaker over time due to a terrible hiatus but the show tries its best to maintain its energy. Sadly never to be concluded but this should absolutely be watched for its lavish world building, charismatic heroes, liberal use of decipherable fantasy cuss words, and its legitimate threat of a villain
The Real Ghostbusters: the classic ghostbusters in cartoon form. Honestly kind of dumb overall but the occasional standout episodes are great. Collect Call of Cthulhu is rather ambitious and well-researched
Extreme Ghostbusters is its sequel and is surprisingly solid despite its extreme minoriteam
The Mysterious Cities of Gold (1982): there's a thread for this right now. Strong on continuity, high on adventure, legit on South American history. It's a comfy kind of exciting and very bingeable
Got a second season in 2012, a third coming up in 2020, and a fourth supposedly on the way so you know they plan to conclude the adventure properly. Can be found on both anime and cartoon sites thanks to being co-developed between France and Japan.

While He-man and the other 80's cartoon staples (As noted in>>1066529 ) are all good, there's plenty of other shows that are well worth watching, but get overlooked.
>Blackstar
Filmation's He-Man before He-Man. Rough around the edges, but you can clearly see why Mattel chose Filmation to produce the He-Man cartoon. Blackstar is an American Indian, BTW.
>BraveStarr
Filmation's other show that started with a "B", ended with a "Star", and also had an Injun as it's protagonist. It's a space western before Cowboy Bebop made space cowboys cool. The show was Lou Scheimer's baby and it shows. Filmation put more love into this show than any other. Sadly it was their last cartoon they ever made.
The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers
The OTHER space western 80's cartoon show. The greatest overlooked 80's cartoon and arguably the greatest 80's cartoon of all time. Fantastic 80's anime styling. Surprisingly deep & dark plots. Gooseman is Alpha Chad as fuck. Best show on this list. Go watch. Now.
Spiderman & Friends
AKA the comfy Spidey cartoon. It has all the charm of the 60's Spiderman cartoon without the long stretches of recycled animation of nothing happening. Spidey is joined by Iceman & Firestar as they battle the various villain of the week the occasional Marvel guest star super hero. The banter between the friends is great. A good show when you need to relax and just want to watch something simple & fun.
>STARCOM: The US Space Force
You like hard Sci-Fi? You like your cartoons supported by NASA? Starcom is for you. Yeah, It's dry as a bone, but it's very reminiscent of 50's pulp sci-fi magazine stories by the likes of Azimov and Heinlein. Also it's AMERICA that's colonized the Solar System, not some United Nations joined space force. Fuck yeah!
There's plenty of other good 80's cartoon series out there, like the Mighty Orbots, Teddy Ruxpin, and the New Adventures of Beany & Cecil. But these were the first five off the top of my head that usually get overlooked and would probably interest the usual /co/ reader.
