It tries very hard to follow The Last Airbender with the character writing. They all have clear and well established motives and personalities that play off each other in ways that write themselves. Kind of undercut by the pretty boring established setting and characters (which is funny since that's the only reason the show exists).

It's alright. Compared to other garbage I've seen, that's a compliment. It's completely harmless and I'm certain kids would find this show amazing. The worst I've seen was that episode where the main 3 are trying to make a plan to take over a nearby armed fortress, but they end up playing D&D all while in a tent, in a military camp that is in the open and is right in front of said armed fortress that is under the control of the main villainous faction. Other than that, it's okay.

D&D can be fun. CAN. It all depends on your group and whether everyone is on the level about what they want to get out of it. If everyone wants a serious story and you get a serious story, or everyone wants a fun romp and you get a fun romp.

No, because the whole point is to discuss what they will do with their specific hero powers. That doesn't translate to chess, but it does translate to D&D. The drama of the episode comes from being unable to coordinate and some characters getting caught up in imagining things that aren't realistic (good or bad things).

This series is 'subtly' shit. Everything is competent except for the larger narrative, character depth and morality. It's missing something, it's not really all that deep, or meaningful, the humor often comes at the direct cost of the narrative. And a lot of aspects of the plot are left loose and unexplored. Characters are not called out for their fucktarded behavior. Often ignore, write off, or forget characters.
The Dialogue and voice acting is competent, the music is competent, the animation is competent. All coming together in a presentable package. But that's it. And for some reason people give it praise.
