The trailer for the Netflix Dark Crystal series dropped yesterday. The nostalgiafags are already creaming their pants over this.

Trailer at least makes it look like it has puppets. I will admit to having no strong connection to the original material, but to be fair I'd prefer this over a bastardization of something like Labyrinth.

ANYONE has the fan-made director's cut of the original? It was removed from literally everywhere because Jim Henson's son or whatever personally asked the guy who made it to pull it down.

He added all the scenes that the studio cut because they were too dark, also got rid of the narration that Henson didn't want in. I agree that the name isn't appropiate but is the best cut of the film.

Seems like it has a lot of CGI. Getting TFA vibes, where there are a few puppets so people can meme about "muh practical effects", but it's still predominantly CG.

That's definitely not true. It's obvious in the trailer a lot of flying creatures are CGI along with environments, vehicles, & some moments where they can't have the puppets actually do precise quick movements.

For what it's worth, Henson Studios used a lot of practical effects and minimal compositing because of the technological limitations of the era. Also, their budgets were pretty thin. 15 mil for the first Dark Crystal. While doing pure puppetry would be very impressive, the idea was to tell a visually striking story, not necessarily to promote some kind of puppet purism.

Greenscreening out puppeteers is almost a necessity, at least, when you consider that the original Ur-mystics were controlled by 4 college students per muppet, all crammed together underneath, during scenes where they walked

To fail. We know they fail, because we've seen how the original film begins.
What is the point of this? How can it be ten hours of 'Resisting' only to fail? I don't get it.
Were they so afraid to make a sequel that they made a pre-ordained prequel instead? Or were they just so bereft of creativity that they couldn't figure out what happened after the Skeksis and the Mystics were gone?

I suspect their name is actually a portmanteau of goblin/gnome, elf and halfling. AD&D was released 5 years prior, so I can kind of imagine where did they get their doughnut steel idea.

You do realize that "elves" were invented by the west and that 99% of all material culture referencing elves has been made by the west as well. Outside of Japan, which doesn't really count in this context since they make everything cute, there is no "alternative" depiction of elves than the western one.

Except Tolkien, the original elf master prime, did describe elves as "beautiful", not as alien abominations. From what I understand, I think the kind of Edlritch horror elf portraits you can see in Baldur's Gate come from D&D. In D&D 3.5e they doubled down on their ugliness.

>Probably just to tell you how all the Gelflings were wiped out/how the original movie MCs are the only ones left.
Why do we need to see that? We're told in the film that the Skeksis rounded 'em up and killed them, because of a prophecy. So now we watch ten hours of Gelflings resisting being genocided, only to fail.
Someone in the trailer said Jim Henson would approve of all this, but I absolutely cannot see it. This series is the visual equivalent of a funeral march and nothing Henson made was ever so bleak and dour; he was eternally optimistic; his favorite song was You Are My Sunshine. I think if he were still alive, we'd be getting a sequel, a story that looks forward, instead of mires in the past.

I barely understand Warhammer but I'm gonna say no. There's no God King to heresy against. The planet of Thra is essentially the deity beings like the Gelfing center their religious life around. Mother Aughra was essentially created as a secondhand avatar for Thra. She was meant to keep watch over 'The Crystal' is which acts as essentially the heart of Thra. But she was enticed by a gift of an orrery by the UrSkeks. Letting her observed the universe. The urSkeks then used The Crystal to divide themselves into the urRu & the Skeksis. The Skeksis became the "guardians" of The Crystal while the urRu went into hiding. From there the Skeksis appointed themselves as rulers of Thra & all the sentient races. Using The Crystal for their purposes of eternal life by draining life from Thra itself.
