I don't think it's nepotism as animators have always networked, I think it's ideology. A lot of them LGBT types who want to create good propaganda instead of good animation. As a result, you end up seeing a lot of shitcoms with bright/saturated color schemes with a fixation of simplicity/cuteness. Genndy Tartakovsky looks like he has a simple art style, but he's always doing something inventive with it because he's a legit good artist, director, and animator who's disconnected from the influences that modern animators have.

Books cause feels because you imagine the motion and the events described so you are getting them as best as they're gonna get for you.

By all means Korra is a beautifully animated show and if you ignore The Last Airbender is more than a competently written show, but after season 1 the writing is so mechanic I could not pretend to give a shit about the series, either character or plot.
Over the Garden Wall besides some vignettes is a show with simple animation and the writing is not particularly complex, technically, emotionally though I was actually stressed when The Beast takes Greg.
