Thoughts on it? I liked the pilot and hope that the series will be just as good.

I thought the pilot was interesting enough. My fear is later down the line the creator will run out of ideas and it will turn to shit.

Also, the art style seems to have changed. Her chin is more rounded compared to the pilot where it was sharp. I kind of preferred the sharp chin since that made it more distinct now it seems more similar to a lot of modern cartoons.

Angles under 120 degrees make the adult audience of cartoon network feel unsafe, corporate had to nix the chin.

In all seriousness I liked it too, the fantastical mystery plot is a classic premise for a series and it shows a commitment to narrative structure; an anthology of random things occurs as the main story builds to a climax, mystery is solved, end show. I describe it in sort of a clinical way here but I really do enjoy that sort of thing. Too many showrunners fish for renewal, it's undignified and it chokes the plot.

Pilot looks great, really hope to se more from it in the future. Art style is kinda samey, but it looks different enough to be fine.

You can't just call everything Steven Universe in lieu of an argument. Lost on the other hand, yes, is an example of how this narrative structure can be mishandled.

Take some perspective, I'm not saying I have high expectations here. I just get the sense from the pilot that somebody has put effort into planning out the overall structure of this series and is creating the show around that plan. Granted, relative to today's animation scene that's pretty fantastical, but in absolute terms of quality it's really just a foot in the door. I'm not saying it'll be good, I'm saying I think it might be watchable.

There's still plenty of room to surprise me, pleasantly or disappointingly, that's how the future works. If you wanted to do some serious speculation instead of just gut feeling, take a look at the staff. Who's in what role, what have they worked on? What about the directorial and writing staff, do they have an online presence, what's their creative philosophy? The information is out there to make a more informed guess as to how this show's going to play out. I prefer to wait.

>I just get the sense from the pilot that somebody has put effort into planning out the overall structure

Yes, they want to imply this without actually doing so. Almost every modern show gets produced from one season to the next with the writers not knowing in advance if they'll get a renewal. 90% of the time, the people who make that decision don't closely monitor the writers so they get milked for as many renewals as they can. Aside from comedies ignoring all linear development, the exceptional series tend to be ones that come up with a central theme and well-defined conflict to develop as early as possible.

Example: Breaking Bad first episode starts with cancer diagnosis and need for money, Walt tells the class he sees chemistry as a study of *change* (a real chemistry teacher would just say it's about electron transfers), and by the end of the episode he's already willing to enter a gunfight with the cops before he remembers he doesn't know how to use a gun. It's clear his drive to make money quickly before he runs out of time is already *changing* him into a cutthroat criminal and the audience is waiting to see how far he'll go with it.

In contrast, Infinity Train starts out with Tulip complaining that their situation doesn't make sense. They don't know why the train exists, where it is, how it works, how they got there, what the antagonist's motives are, how it relates to the numbers on her hand, etc. What they know is there are puzzles in the way and the numbers changed when the antagonist ran away. Now some of those loose ends will probably get an answer by the end of the series, but with how nebulous the premise is I expect it to be hastily scraped together and unsatisfying. There's nothing stopping them from making an amazing story. But there's also nothing forcing them to stay on track.

Not going to bother watching the pilot again, so from what I remember:

The CalArts isn't so bad (but now it is, looking at OP's image). The premise is very interesting, however, the episode was full of LOLZRANDUMB "humor", and I detest fart "jokes"; the "humor" was pretty cringe-inducing. The main character is supposed to be intelligent but comes off as a pseudo-intellectual; also, "haha I'm a quirky nurd-gurl XD". The title itself was kind of gross, but it's just the title. I blame the poor pacing on the fact that it was a pilot. And last but not least, I have a feeling this is going to be like Lost.

And the fact that the creator worked on Gravity Falls or something; another case of nepotism in the industry?

I'll watch it but I don't have high hopes for it.

This

It's baffling how many people are making excuses for obvious trash like this. This show may have an interesting premise, but there's nothing to suggest the staff won't fuck up the execution like every other Cal Arts show; and if the pilot is anything to go on, that already seems to be the case before it began. The generic uniform art style should've been a red flag to everyone the moment its pilot was released. If Cartoon Network can't afford to hire good artists for this show, what makes anyone think they can hire good writers?

Actually, yeah, I think the round glasses would sort of work with the new design.

Now I notice her hair, it's really bothering me. There's this strand that's sticking out but because her hair is just paint-filled in, it looks really bad. Worst of all, it barely ever moves, it's like someone bent a lock of hair and glued the end to the rest of the hair.

But I mean that the characters themselves look out of place in some shots, like they were glued onto a real photo.

At least the title design doesn't look super lazy like before.

Season 2 came out. It's got a better story & theme around identity. Better than the first season's theme of…. divorce? But it's also got a bunch of errors. It's also really brutal to the poor reflection cops. There's more world building, which is a double edged sword. Overall it's okay but still don't expect to get anything groundbreaking out of it. It's just a weird little show that isn't completely ugly to look at or annoying to watch. That's high praise for a western cartoon these days.
