I've heard horror stories from my father about "jackrabbit stew", he says its the most god awful thing he's ever tasted in his life. Then again, this coming from a man who is too much of a coward to try anything new, so his opinion might be overlooked by somebody more adventurous.

Is it ok to eat the suburban rabbits hopping around my front yard? They come out when the sun sets and are everywhere.
I have a bow show I could shoot them quietly.
>inb4 it's illegal
Nobody will see it.

Check your state hunting regs. It may actually be legal.
Alternatively, you may find that it is legal to trap rabbits in areas where you can't shoot them… just have to check your traps regularly and find out what's for dinner.
Pic related is a screenshot of local DNR regs pertaining to nuissance animal control.. your mileage may vary.

so in the future i plan on owning land and having a small subsistence farm; a friend of mine has a rabbit hutch on his.
pros:
effectively free lean protein(they lived mostly on garden and kitchen vegetable scraps with cheap pellets to supplement)
quality fur for arts and crafts time with some time investment
quiet, doesn't stink up the property, minimal fuss care-wise with the exception of scheduling mating times.
cons:
protein too lean, ya need to keep fattier animals as well to not die if you actually go offgrid
i personally find the things damn adorable, especially domesticated and docile, so i don't know if i'd be willing to wring their tiny little necks when the time comes.

Check them for parasites before cooking.
They're usually fine in the winter as the cold kills off the fucked ones but a few always make it through. I wouldn't eat any in the warmer months though.

Rabbits do have a smell.
Different than chickens, but not necessarily less smelly.
If you've got the room, check out goats.

well granted, this guy's hutch and coop were both small and about 50 yards away from his house, so even in the dog days of summer i didn't notice a bad smell from his setup. all livestock kinda reek

If they're considered invasive or a pest, they're usually fair game.
My state allows hunters to kill any wild hogs they come across.

Properly cooking them kills all the bacteria, it's the act of skinning and dressing them that'll get you ill. If you're hunting rabbits, always have PPE for when you clean them up.

id suggest a live trap, then you can just wring his neck or chop his head off. Im pretty sure its legal if its on your land, nobody is gonna care anyway.

Good plan. Eat the rabbits, milk the goats.
You've got your protein and fat taken care of.
