Like I seriously do not get the appeal of spending $400 on a goddamn blender.

Vitamix is not the only expensive blender.

There is also Blendtec, and Waring Commercial, and a handful of others.

The biggest difference when you step up from a $39 Sunbeam is that the motors don't wear out after 2 years. Since the motors don't wear out, they sell replacement parts (Lids, seals, blades, etc)… so you can have two or three blending pitchers. Not a big deal in most homes, but very big deal in a bar or commercial kitchen.

If I was upgrading from my Oster (one of the old style ones that lasts forever), I'd look at a Waring Commercial. You trade away a few motor speeds that you don't use for some serious durability, and a much bigger pitcher.

Bartender here. We use Oster with all-metal drive.

Last forever, replacement parts are everywhere and they don't cost anywhere near close to $400.

Basically:

>longer lasting

>way more powerful, which means you need to add less liquid to blend things and they can blend sturdier stuff, and faster

>can blend to a substantially finer texture

As someone who uses a vitamix almost every day working in a kitchen, I can tell you it makes a pretty huge difference using a really top-end blender.

>Why the fuck would anyone want a vitamix

That's like asking "why the fuck does the BO own so many Asko appliances at home"

Because they're insanely well-built and only rarely give up the ghost, thanks to glorious Swede engineering. That said, I would never pay nearly half a grand for a effin' blender.

In other words: you might or might not get what you pay for.

But is it worth about five to ten times the cost if you're not blending everything all the time? My guess is getting second-hand junk from Goodwill or Salvation Army is probably good enough for most of us.

I can tell you I wish I had a MUCH better, bigger blender than these things from Goodwill so I wouldn’t have to keep stopping every several minutes to do this because they’re both overheating, AND so I could blend everything in one go, much quicker.

But something tells me I’d need to spend like $300-500 for something like that. Maybe I should just to save me at least a half-hour of cooking time every single week! Even if it meant putting myself in CC debt just to do so!!

Oh yeah, with a fuckhuge one I wouldn't have to:

>blend some of the ingredients

>dump in pot

>blend some more

>dump in pot

>repeat 1-3 more times

>mix mush with huge spoon

That the final result would be less chunky would just be icing on the cake.

Damn blender's like a fucking unknown URL with a download, no one but those with the damn things even know what it really is.

I'm just worried that spending that much money (which could be spent on a used car, moped, motorbike, a bike, rent, etc.) in the years to come would lose all value, and if something like the lid or cup breaks? Is there a lifetime warranty? I'm too lazy to bother looking up this product's website.

Is this the general appliances thread?

the holy trinity: vitamix, kitchenaid, robot-coupe

Kitchenaid is a grey area.

Yes, they're good, but some are more equal than others.

Standard recommendation around the family here seems to be don't waste money on a flip-top Kitchenaid; get one with a bowl lift.

If you don't know what that difference is, you aren't really in the market for that class of mixer anyway and should look at something much lighter weight, like a $15 hand mixer (perfect for easily preparing most cake mix batters).

Can someone explain to me what the fuck is a food processor is for if it's not just a literal blender in a different shape that cuts your veggies? From what I've seen on youtube, thing just either chop up your vegs or mix dough. Never seen the usage of it before, or used one.

they're great for rough, fine chopping, like if you need onions for a sauce that are just going to be cooked down anyway and don't need to be uniform cubes. on top of that, they're fantastic at making emulsions, so hollandaise/any egg sauce really, vinaigrettes, shit like that comes together very easy, especially since foodpros have holes in the top through which you can drizzle your fats. lastly they're awesome for pulsing and chopping dry shit like nuts, dried mushrooms, bread, hard cheese rinds, fuckin you name it. if you have a hardcore one you can make nut butters.

honestly, for home-gamers even the fliptop model will be fine. there's one in the kitchen i work at and it's one of our baking staff's daily workhorses for stiff icings, meringue, cream whipping, all kinds of motor/hinge intensive stuff. granted the bowl lift ones i've used previously were sturdier and were much more stable with bigger tasks like mashed potatoes.

i'm not sure what you're asking. i think you're asking which design is more convenient for home use, and honestly it's probably the swing top since it gives easier access to the bowl. the lift is just much more robust and you can use it to move the paddle around in the bowl while it's running.

totally worth it.

Got a vitamix and it actually BLENDS kale otherwise you get long stringy bits from using a cheeper brand.

also there designed to blend for a long time so I can make pumpkin soup warm just by blending it for a long time.

oh so the swing top is convenient for getting the bowl out where the lift let's you do more and probably better to use in general.

Still little bits after tossing in frozen blackberries though. Maybe that extra $180 would've gotten me that much further.
