They protected a slighter better world order than Communism post WW2 (i.e. Cold War). I won't say a great world order, but definitely a preferable one. In Europe, Japan, and South Korea especially. US troops even rebuilt Europe from the ground up from the rubble of WW2, and planted systems in place where European countries largely don't need military themselves (i.e. NATO). This is why all of these countries have enough spare cash to devote 10% of their GDP to social services (like public healthcare). They get to do this while even American citizens can't get public healthcare on the same level. It's US military that insured a lot of this across Europe and Asia.
