The angels envy us for they cant suffer for God and prove their love in that manner, so we are to unite our sufferings to that of Christ as Paul says ' Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.' .
Also as God tells Paul when he complained about an ailment "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.".
Remember the beatitudes, the ones who suffer are blessed and the ones who have it all have it harder to save their souls.
Suffering has meritorious power, through the cross God saved, through the cross we become like Him and can help our souls and other's souls.
Wonderful text on suffering by Saint Jean Vianney:

Your conclusion must be like that of Paul's: "Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me."
I know its hard for such a worldly generation like ourselves to have that point of view of suffering, but its the truth, have strength.
