What do Christians, particularly Orthodox Christians mean when they speak of the raising of the dead? Are all souls to be reunited with the body in the end?

Also Orthodox book suggestions thread.

>Are all souls to be reunited with the body in the end?

Yes, unlike other religions where they hate the body and the material universe, we want our bodies back. It doesn't make much sense if your point of reference is eastern religions like Hinduism, but in Genesis, God called the universe "good" and even though Adam and Eve sinned and this caused all creation to be corrupted, God wants to redeem the universe (and us). It's part of our whole outlook that religion is not about fleeing from a corrupted world, but rather about loving what God, our only benefactor, has made.

For this reason, some Christians believe in something called "soul sleep" basically, this is similar to what atheists expect death to be, i.e. nothing, because they don't believe that the soul can have a life independent from the body. Still it's not atheism, because what they mean is that they will be raised in the resurrection, when Christ returns to judge the quick (the living) and the dead, and to lead his loyal followers into a new creation, redeemed from sin and death.

Not Orthodox, but I would also like to add that the dislike of the "material" unfortunately seeps into some Christian teachings as well. The Premillenial doctrine of the Rapture (and many Protestant depictions of the afterlife in general) seem to only look forward to a destruction of the earth and see the Kingdom of God as a purely spiritual experience. They seem to misinterpret Jesus when he speaks about "one will be taken, and the other left behind" and seem to think that the one being "left behind" is in the wrong and will undergo tribulation, while the one being "taken" is going to heaven. The so called thought behind the "Left Behind" novels.

But Jesus comes to make a New Heaven and a New Earth and to give us glorified, but physical bodies like his. And the ones "taken" are taken into condemnation. The ones "left behind" are like Noah, left to enjoy the new Kingdom of God.

When you die you're trapped in the dream world and that place as we all know can be pretty awful. Having a conscious brain that filters out information and provides the illusion of consistency can be pretty nice sometimes. I'm just worried about what ghosts and demons are doing that my brain won't let me see. Something the spirits can be nice though. A few months ago I had a dream I got a job at a place and that morning I got a call from that exact same place asking me to come for an "interview" where I was pretty much just handed the job without any questions. The physical world is just a subset of the dream world, like a safe space. I don't know what's beyond the dream world but I have faith God's at the top of it all making sure everything will be okay.

I agree, even when I was a deist, I knew for sure that the idea of the rapture had it backwards. Being "taken" in the ancient world always has the connotation of kidnapping, slavery, etc. Jesus didn't watch "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" before speaking of those who will be taken, versus those who will be left behind.

Noah is exactly right.

Yes, but it's a redeemed body for a redeemed creation.

We believe Christ separated death from life such that we shall live in a reality without death. We cannot describe any further since it is impossible to speak about such things in this world of ours.

If you're interested in orthodoxy, you have to partake in it to understand it. One cannot see it from outside. Though "Elements of Faith" by Christos Yannaras is often given to newcomers.

Today's epistle reading was 1 Corinthians 15:1-22, which is broadly about this.

Matthew 5:17-20 King James Version (KJV)

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven .
