I agree with Paul about speaking a few words in understanding than many in tongues but tongues are a Holy language the devil cannot understand. I needed to speak in tongues to be delivered from a certain evil. If these people want to praise God in tongues, let them alone, for they do so in faith.

Don't fear. Tongues are not strange fire. Strange fire are all of the odd "miracles" and practices (like "fire tunnels" and people running around acting like animals) that some sects are engaging in, but have no biblical counterpart. But here however, "the tongues of angels" are literally mentioned by Paul. It is biblical. Not "strange fire". Not all tongues are meant for missionary work either, but some are used in private prayer, which Paul explains. "But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God" [1 Cor 14:28]. The real fault with some is the public display of it (and there are fakers too, no doubt). Paul explicitly says that it should be kept to oneself, as the public would think you were mad without an interpreter.

And it's not just a Protestant charismatic issue. Even Teresa of Avila (a doctor in the Catholic church) spoke of tongues:

"Amongst these favours, at once painful and pleasant, our Lord sometimes causes in the soul a certain jubilation and a strange and mysterious kind of prayer. If He bestows this grace on you, praise Him fervently for it; I describe it so that you may know that it is something real. I believe that the faculties of the soul are closely united to God but that He leaves them at liberty to rejoice in their happiness together with the senses, although they do not know what they are enjoying nor how they do so. This may sound nonsense but it really happens."

This is jubilation of the Spirit and not your mere human mind speaking and definitely not malicious or evil. In my experience, they are accompanied with pure holy thoughts and images that are seemingly scriptural flowing in your mind. Like a dam gets opened and the bible is flowing through you. But what comes out of your mouth isn't intelligible.

Why are you saying they aren't "strange fire"? Macarthur calls all supernatural gifts, "strange fire". He came up with the term, so that's what they are to him. He is too afraid to admit spiritual warfare into his world view and he's hardened his heart to personal experience of God and now he's a reprobate, preaching bad doctrine like you can be saved after taking the mark of the beast.

Real authentic tongues from the Holy Spirit is 2 categories. When you speak in your own native language and people hear you in their own language or when God infuses the knowledge of a language into someone and they knowingly speak it fluently. Both of them are done in the context of preaching to people who speak different languages and both are known human languages. These are found in Acts.

Why interpret that St.Teresa's quote as being about tongues? She knew the bible, she'd simply say 'i spoke tongues'. I've read her autobiography, she talks about all kinds of spiritual graces, never mentions tongues.
