How do you effectively explain the trinity to non-christians without falling into modalism or some other heresy, especially since the fullness of the trinity is a mystery in itself and can never be fully comprehended?

You don't need to bother with any detailed theological arguments. I'll say that much.

You just need to focus on Jesus. Those who might believe in God easily accept the idea of God the Father and even the Holy Spirit. Who they truly fight is Jesus (and inevitably will show themselves to not care for the Father or the Holy Spirit either). All you have to do is quote what Jesus said about himself and let it run on autopilot. If they don't believe him, that's their own fault.

Maybe I'm being a bit of a downer to those who like arguments and apologetics, but you shouldn't linger too long around some people. It's not incumbent upon you to save everyone's soul. It's only incumbent upon you to preach the gospel. Whether they believe it or not is not our job. Don't throw your pearls before swine, as Jesus himself said. And "If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet."

The short version is this:

The three are different persons but one God

They are father, son, and holy ghost

Each is fully God

None of them are created

We believe this because it is what the Bible teaches, and even though it seems strange there is no contradiction.

The long version is just the athanasian creed. The most common mistake is arianism.

There is the Holy Spirit, God from God, the Son, God from God, and God.

The doctrine of the Trinity is not a mystery, even if generation and procession are. The "shield of the trinity" is an idol, by the way.

It's the only mistake. Discussions of the Trinity is just Christology. And every opponent in any age is just people who don't believe Jesus' claims. They just want to make him a "great teacher" or some kind of exemplary human. At best, one who only took on the Divine at baptism. Some may obscure that at first, but we need to drive that point home and be singleminded in conversations. Weed them out for the haters of Christ that they really are.

There is ONE God. The Father in heaven.

The One God has an image: Jesus is His image. The Son.

Christians follow Paul and reject the Law, the 10 commandments.

What are the first two commandments? About God and His image.

The Holy Spirit is in the spiritual Temple of God. It is the presence of God in His temple.
