I have a hardcore catholic christian friend who tells me not to worry about sin, because God loves me and forgives my sin. Jesus died for our sins, and only God can be sinless. I know this sounds like the setting for christian hedonism, but would God really want us to go through life and worry about every sin when we're destined to be sinful?

Paul writes somewhere something like, "I do not dwell on the things of the past, but I run ahead." I can't find the exact verse, but the point is, don't dwell on your sin. You fall, get back up and continue on after Christ.

It's similar to the severity Jesus said - that if your right eye makes you sin, CAST it out. It would be better to be blind than to burn in hell. Which is to say, do all you can to get that sin out of your life. Not literally pluck your eye out, but completely change your life around and get the things causing so much trouble OUT of your life… before it's all over and too late.
I'm afraid that not even Catholics get it anymore, unfortunately. You used to be pretty good for it.

Don't worry about sin, but at the same time, don't allow sin to enter into your heart. If you fail to keep God's word, just remember he loves you even in your sinful state, but at the same time, pray for the wisdom to learn from your failures, pray for forgiveness and ask for the grace to not sin anymore. Basically what >>841162 said. Dwelling on sin is a good way to make it either a habit and/or to go into a state of despair and not ask for forgiveness. At the same time, learn from your failure, get back up and keep on running after Christ. "Fall down 7 times, get up 8"
