He became the Chief Guard of the Jasenovac concentration camp where he was nicknamed "Fra Sotona" ("Brother Satan") due to his sadism. When he was hanged for war crimes, he wore his clerical garb, although some claim he had been defrocked.[2]

If you're point is the ancient Greek and the Roman Republic and early Roman Empire, yes. But both fell.
The Greeks became pleasure seeking hedonists, and fell.
The Roman leadership became degenerate and hedonistic. Rome was eventually converted to the faith.
The faith in the Catholic Church taught sacrifice to the greater good of the people, honesty, mental and physical discipline, obedience, love of learning not just about religion but God's creation, compassion for others and our basic Christian values. You didn't find those strengths in pagan Rome.
