If you're not getting opposition, then you're probably struggling with your own mind and by depriving yourself of the sins and pleasures of the world. They're called "temptations" for a reason and don't always come easy to avoid. Only by God's grace do you get past it. Anyone telling you that being a Christian is fun is lying to you. All it says is that they're not living up to any of it. They're people who've never battled their own sins or said anything that sparked hostility from the world. For the record, Marx was a self-hating Jew who actually converted to Lutheranism, funnily. Which is probably why he even thought up this stupid phrase to begin with. Lutheranism teaches salvation by Faith Alone, which IS an opiate in a way. Marx came up with this view on religion because his own beliefs of Lutheranism were that silly. You don’t even know what that quote means. Marx means that people depend on religion to be happy. He wasn’t equating religion to something that’s harmful like a drug, but something that people cannot let go of, lest bad things start to happen. This quote doesn’t imply anything about the validity of religion.
