I have a conundrum that is on my heart right now. It's not something I'm currently dealing with, but in this sinful world it's only a matter of time before things get savage.

I think we all agree that forgiveness and mercy are things a good Christian should be willing to give to someone who's willing to take it. I'll say that's a given for the purposes of this conversation.

What if, however, you have the upper hand on true evil, and you know that such a creature will turn on you the minute you offer your hand in friendship? What if you have a choice between finishing that evil off or letting it escape to do more harm? "Vengeance is mine," sayeth the Lord, but what if God has put one in that situation to carry out His will?

This vexes me greatly. I've seen examples in fiction (how many murders committed by the Joker are on Batman's head for not stopping him permanently?) and in my personal life where someone gave mercy to a nasty person that should have been put down like the rabid animal it was. This doesn't necessarily mean killing, but also ruining the evil person or denying them access to their weapons of choice.

When are we allowed to cross the line and permanently stop someone?

>Disclaimer: I'm not planning such a confrontation, now or ever. But anyone that tries to hurt my loved ones during Tribulation will be denied the ability to walk at the very least if I get the drop on them.

Helping evil is evil in itself. Sirach says this somewhere and Jesus said don't cast pearls before swine or they will rend you into pieces.

What does "offering your hand in friendship" mean? If someone committed a crime worthy of punishment by all means let the authorities know. It is not the matter of individuals to deal out criminal justice, but we can help the system in cases where a criminal is out and we might be able to stop them by conveying the facts.

>where someone gave mercy to a nasty person that should have been put down like the rabid animal it was.

You have to remember that God is keeping everything and everyone alive and if God wanted to he could put a person into judgement for their sins at any moment. Their life is in his hands. It is up to us to obey the commandments, the precepts, the statutes that God gave us in his word. Also that's kind of edgy.

Amen.

"Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?" - Matthew 26:53

Remember, btw, that Jesus said this specifically to Peter (after he cut off a guard's ear). He's a perfect example of someone who thought he was doing right by physically attacking evil. Yet Jesus rebuked him and had to clean up after his mess.

And personally, I always saw parallels with Peter and Judas. I think Judas' real motivation wasn't mere conniving or betrayal for the mere sake of it, but a desire to create a situation that "coaxed" Jesus to fight back… so Jesus could finally have his "revolutionary" Messiah here on earth. Once he realized his error, he killed himself. But he again, he was no mere scoundrel. He was a Zealot. A fighter. These were the men who wielded long daggers and shanked Jews in the alleyways for collaborating with Romans. Both he and Peter seemed to be fiery men of action at their core. Judas being the war prone type and Peter a simple hotblooded man who was prone to impulse. Both had an urge to fight, but Jesus only spared one. Peter's strength had positives and Jesus knew that he was able to lead and comfort his brothers… but he had to learn hard lessons and get over these older habits first. Judas was less salvageable and so he ended up where he did.

But my point is, it's good to have a warrior's heart. But it's also a dangerous path and needs to be transformed positively and undergo a Christian makeover. Relishing in vengeance and violence will not lead anywhere good. Even Peter only escaped by the skin of his teeth (Jesus said he specifically prayed for him and that Satan was keen on having his soul).

I should add that maybe Judas wasn't necessarily a zealot. I'm going off of his name, which might derive from Sicarii. The dagger-wielding hitmen of the zealots. The same clowns who got chased up Massad later on in AD 70. But it's possible that Sicarii didn't exist as a title until that AD 70 revolution. Some say it was a pejorative first from the word "sikrin". Which just meant a person prone to violence. Which is still fitting to my overall point.

>how many murders committed by the Joker are on Batman's head for not stopping him permanently?

How many victims of the Joker turned to God because of his malignity? It is not Batman's job to end the Joker's stewardship over his own life. Batman is responsible for combating suffering where he can. God has plenty of ways of taking the lives of those he pleases; He does not need to use your hands.

What about people who don't like to bant by their own nature but try anyway because they see a fedora blaspheming God or something like that? The person has no temptation to talk back, but not doing so might lead to the fedorafication of the website and loss of souls.

You don't have to bant with a fedora. From time to time, you might see it is unwise to remain, but work on one-liners maybe. Don't engage in extensive apologetics. It's really not worth it to linger too long…. imho.

I meant "you might see it unwise to remain *silent* "

Not sure how I missed the last word.
