I hear all the time from East Orthodox circles talking about their modern day saints, and how they swoon over people who were extraordinary people like Elder Ephraim, Elder Sophrony, St Paisios, ect. In fact, I heard from a priest that "the fact that Orthodoxy is producing great spiritual saints today while the Roman Catholics don't is proof that Orthodoxy is the full faith".

Do Roman Catholics do this? Are there any Roman Catholics alive today that are saintly? Or are there any Catholic 'saints' that recently reposed in the last few decades?

I'm surprised an Orthodox priest said that. I've heard others say that they don't really have the same type of formalization/canonization process. Saints are merely an acknowledgement of something that was already true.. and that there are many saints that are only known to God. The unsung heroes in our lives, if you will? Maybe your grandma :)

I'm not sure of any living saints, but Bernadette Roberts would be a recent one of the mystical inclination, I haven't read her works so I don't know of her orthodoxy.

And there is the guy in vid related, who is still alive.

Although none of these people have yet to receive official recognition by the church

Since one of the requirements for sainthood, as I understand it, is that when folks ask the potential saint to pray for them after they've given up their mortal body, that the potential saint's intercession is granted.

Saints go to heaven immediately, they don't wait around for the resurrection like the rest of us. That's why they can pray for us. Souls in Limbo can't even pray for their own souls.

Yeah we Orthodox do canonization differently from Romans, It was more of a referral of "the fact this church is helping people become holy figures full of humility and grace shows that the church creates saints" Idk how else to put it.

I don't know if she's a saint, but this little girl Miriam is a beacon of faith for me. She's a Chaldean Catholic, but outside of the white power types, I think all here could see the light in her too.

>He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me." - Matthew 18:2-5

Ah, Justo Gallego Martínez's cathedral! I've been there. It's absolutely terrifying and extremely inspiring at the same time. Terrifying cause, as Justo himself says, he has no knowledge of architecture or construction, and it shows. The spiral staircase in particular looks like it's just waiting to claim its first victim. It leads to an interior balcony made out of an uncomfortably thin layer of concrete and with a flimsy railing. There's another set of stairs that lead to the crypt, which are structurally more sound, and wouldn't be too dangerous if not for the low entrance, about 1,70m in height, with pointy irons sticking out, looking lustfully at your forehead.

Once inside the crypt there's what, for me, was the most striking thing about the temple: a single open grave. His grave, he has already excavated his very own grave, well aware of the fact that he's going to die. Not only is the cathedral all his life, it's also his tomb. It's a level of awareness of your own mortality that really makes you stop and think.

If anyone ever goes to Madrid, consider visiting Justo's cathedral. It'll take you a whole morning to go there, and there are many arguably better ways to spend your time in Madrid, but I think it's worth it. It's most definitely unique.

There's a plaque there written by Justo in which he tells the story of his life and says he's building the cathedral "in gratitude to the life He has given me and in penance for those who do not follow His path".

Both Caths and Orthos declare modern saints. What differs is what kind of saints they have. The Orthos have modern saints they can can point to and cheerfully exclaim "this is what the Orthodoxy is and always has been". Martyrs which fill up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. (Col 1:24) Bishops, who lay down their life for the sheep and who are followed by the sheep for the sheep recognizes the voice of a good shepherd. (John 10:11) Venerable monks, who try to hide under "the basket" in their humility but who are made by God to illuminate the universe with divine light. (Matth. 5:15)

There are saints but as they are maxed on the virtue of humility you wont see any of them going out of their way to publicize their sanctity unless God forces them through extraordinary graces like Padre Pio.

Not to mention all of those that the church misses and only God knows. The posthumous church process is just a recognition not what makes them saints in the eyes of God.

Can't say I've heard of many saintly candidates performing miracles, recently.
