When you see this depiction of buff Jesus, what do you think? I mean, what thoughts come to mind?

This is a statue from a South Korean church. They didn't make it as a joke, it's just normal to them. I liked it and so when my friend drew me this picture in a church, I asked him to make Jesus and Saint Peter cartoonishly buff as well.

But I found when I showed the statue to a Christian woman, she went silent and seemed to be offended.

Why?

So that's why I'm here to ask what your thoughts are. I suspect you'd say it's blasphemous, but actually why?

I think the woman got offended because her god/father figure was sexualised. He is reimagined as a sexual object. I think many catholic men would also find it offensive if Mary was re imagined as some sexy slut.

Cartholics, what do you think of this picture of Mary?

I think it's ahistorical and misses the point of Christ's condescension

One could see it has a representation of what really is in the cross(the All Powerful God that could smite them all down if He wished so but chooses to suffer for our salvation instead) rather than what our eyes see.

Like if you wanted to draw the Eucharist but instead of drawing a piece of bread you draw glorious present Christ.

Reminds me of when an exorcist in a talk said that when doing exorcisms he himself has no power but he has a 800 pounds gorilla behind his back (Jesus) ready to obliterate those demons.

To be honest, the weirdest thing isn't that Christ is buff, but that he doesn't properly look like he's suffering/dying.

And I do understand the sort of symbolism you could associate to that, but it's still very strange to me.

It makes me think that furries are gay, which is accurate.

Depicting Jesus as anything but a regular man is blasphemy. We don't know what Jesus looked like, but we do know that his appearance was similar to everyone else, otherwise Judas wouldn't have had to identify him.

No, I do not believe Jesus had long hair and wore long robes.

>No, I do not believe Jesus had long hair and wore long robes.

Shoulder length hair wouldn't have been considered long on a man back then. Remember, it got cold in the desert… Hair could keep you from freezing at night. During the day, it keeps the sun off your neck and shoulders, which keeps you cool. Also remember Samson. He was dedicated to YHWH, and so it was not allowed to cut his hair because that would desecrate him. Why would God have used that imagery if it didn't reflect Jesus, a man with a far higher consecration than Samson's?

The prohibition against men having long hair is clearly about men appearing effeminate… So normal length hair wouldn't have been an issue.

All Jews are commanded to keep their hair long on the sides. Samson just grew it out completely.

"Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard" - Leviticus 19:27

That said, that statue is stupid. Jesus wasn't roider.

Just to add, I don't mean the modern/rabbinic/Ashkenazi style necessarily. They've reinterpreted Leviticus 19 as meaning that they must grow out their sidelocks… yet shave the rest. Scripture doesn't say anything about shaving elsewhere. Like everything they do, they add even more laws to a simple one.

Yes, it's the Nazarite vow. I just don't know where people got the idea that Jews didn't grow out their hair in other ways, even as a non-Nazarites. It's right there in the Torah.

It reminds me of those Jehovah Witness or Baptist drawings of Jesus, where he's depicted as some 1950s era boyscout.

It's not saying to never shave or get a haircut, it's saying to not have weird facial hair or odd haircuts. It's saying to not look like a pagan cultist or a punk on the street.

The ironic thing is that Talmud Jews took scripture to defend their abnormal haircuts.

It's funny, because now they really are pagan cultists. Moses wouldn't even recognize them, and if he did he would probably have them stoned on the spot. >>827261
