That's the inherent problem with Sola scriptura. Anyone can read the bible and use it as a tool to push their agenda.
The verse where Jesus says
> don't you know that you are gods?
Has been used to justify gnosticism and other new age, hippy dippy BS. Without the proper historical context (the OT) anything Jesus says can be skewed.
This is why we need apostolic succession. The teachings of the apostles are passed down by ensuring we are getting the right interpretation.
