If all you do with your time is vidya and all you spend your money on is vidya and all you talk about is vidya and it is getting to the point where it takes over your life (ie cosplaying at conventions, getting fat and obese, can't go more than 20 minutes without playing vidya) you may have an idolatry problem.

The context of that passage puts it in perspective and clears it up a lot (as putting any passage in context will do). God was saying to not represent Him as any image because He is not something that can be described by anything on the earth. It is (partially) for this reason that worshipping an idol is sin, because you are worshipping the works of your own hands and not God. It's why we shouldn't even try to use images to represent God the Father when we worship Him because we'd end up worshipping something else entirely, and that would break the commandment of having no other gods.

Anything can become an idol (except God, of course). But playing video games is not inherently idolatrous.

Passages in scripture have like 5 base meanings and a million applications, the use here is one of the applications based on the alternate meanings. It's fine.

They can be, for most people they are,and they are all a waste of time. At least the majority of them.

If you're ignoring the worshiping part associated with idolatry and just focusing on the creating an image of things on earth part an image board is probably the wrong place for that discussion.

So the Sistine Chapel is heretical?

It's not heretical, but honestly in general it is not good to do. Jesus can be represented since He has an image, representing the Spirit through His symbols (dove, fire, etc) is also fine. God the Father has no symbols, all the things that appeared as Him in the OT were the pre-existant Christ. We literally do not know how He looks, and out to refrain from even trying. Who has seen Christ has seen the Father.

Why is it that everyone who quotes that passage accompanies it with an image?
