I mean, if we're looking at a pedigreed cat you better have purchased from the breeder, yeah. But for domestic shorthairs there's no point. Those often come from kitten mills and you're only supporting a bad practice. Plenty of abandoned cats are in search of a home.

Local pet stores, in America (assuming anon is in America), are pretty terrible in general and don't seem to be run by people who care about animals at all. The one near my parent's house sells only mutt "designer d0gs" for ridiculously high prices and domestic shorthair cats for over $100 dollars. The cats all look like they are almost adults, or are way too young to be away from their mother. The d0gs are also too young to be sold and certainly come from puppy farms.
