While having a pedigreed cat never seemed worth it to me, I am nonetheless fairly interested in the subject of cat breeds. Some are really awesome.

Post your favorite cat breeds. Mine are the birman for how beautiful and fluffy they are. The chartreux and norwegian forest cats aren't too shabby either.

Those are not breeds, though, they're coats.

Also all european shorthairs are white, that's like saying a brunette is a niggress. Here is an actual nigger cat. Sokoke, Kenyan breed.

Actually curious what are the common breeds of housecats you find? You only seem to hear about the "exocitic" ones

Most cats are european shorthair. They're the basic model, if you will. Breeds are carefully selected cats that fit into a specific model, the most well-known and distinctive being the persian cat.

There are variations of the shorthair by continent, but they're not actually too different.

That looks more like a melanistic serval. Savannah cats, as serval hybrids, have body types much closer to an housecat than that

All wild cat hybrids are pretty cool.

Reminds me on an anecdote, I was at my parents' place this summer and we watched a documentary on kittens. It featured two bengals. My father went "hold up, different species can't interbreed, right ? How is this possible ?"

Since I'm a zoo buff I explained to him that while it was a good rule of thumb, it wasn't an ironclad law, and indeed some felinae can interbreed when they're not only not the same species but also not even the same genus. (Bengals are made from felis catus and prionailurus bengalensis, the leopard cat). He refused to believe me, he's stubborn that way.

Also the famed iriomote cat (pic related) is a subspecies of the leopard cat. The more you know !

What is the difference between a species and a subspecies? Are bengals fertile?

Yeah I always thought different species by definition couldn't reproduce. Otherwise I fail to see the need for a distinction between species and subspecies.

Fertile as shit.

>The Bengal Cat personality is drawn from its domestic cat parentage. Despite its wild ancestry, the Bengal is an affectionate, sociable breed. This is provided that they are separated by at least 3 generations from the original crossing between a domestic and Asian Leopard Cat. Closer generations, 1st through 3rd generations, are considered "filial" and are used for breeding and specialized pet environments and are not considered domestic pet cats. The 4th generation and later Bengals are social, extroverted cats that love human companionship and like being part of whatever's going on.

Same goes with Savannah cats, the hybrids between cat and serval.

>Yeah I always thought different species by definition couldn't reproduce. Otherwise I fail to see the need for a distinction between species and subspecies.

A common mistake is to believe taxonomy is a hard science. It's really more of a wobbly catalog that's being constantly debated by dudes with wildly different angles and domains of expertise.

Originally it was mostly based on compared anatomy of skeletons. In modern times it's more dictated through molecular genetics, which is pretty much the exact opposite angle since we've gone from distinguishing phenotypes to genotypes.

And then there's the whole shitshow with the subspecies. Pretty much nobody agrees on what a subspecies is, exactly, and I'm pretty sure a lot of it is political. All the types of cat (felis catus or felis silvestris catus ? Science pretty much tells you "heh, pick one I guess".), nigger and human are supposed to be the same subspecies, but then you have shit like Rockhopper penguins, which, I quote :

>Southern Rockhopper penguins are split into two subspecies and they are defined by their location of reproduction.

And then there's a current debate about some mosquitoes in the London subway evolving to adapt to its specific climate and they're being called an entire new species by some.

So while I don't really understand the mechanics between interspecies hybrids, I at least know for sure taxonomy isn't primarily concerned with it, to say the least.

Ragdoll cats are just lovely and very intelligent. They tend to be huge, too. Nice, mellow temperament, very sweet, loyal and affectionate. Never had one myself but my best friend has had many and I've known all his cats through the years. Amazing beasts, and very beautiful. Their coats are super soft.
