Well, first and foremost i don't actually know a lot about history, much less about the founding and progression of Canada. Second, i think if the USA wanted some land, they'd just take it; i can only assume the reason that the western north border is as level as it is is because it was too damn cold north of that line. Third, i also assume that the very essence of Canada is 'here's the british colonies that didn't rebel against the crown, and also some frenchies for some reason'. Why are the french even in Canada, anyhow? France and England were enemies during the revolution.

Canada was founded after a) the brits took off focus from Canada as a colony to focus on India and b) economic relations to keep Canada afloat by trading with the states fell through as civil war erupted there. It's part of the reason why Canada's neatly enclose the fur trade routes from the West Coast to the East Coast.
Now, the reason why Queebs are treated so favorably? Since the fur trade required passage through the St. Lawrence river, they had to get the Queebs on board, lest they feel snubbed and essentially commit to gorilla warfare on fur and log shipments. To this end, they gave them parliamentary overrepresentation (given their population and province size), and preferential federal budget redistribution.
The french were still in Canada because the brits didn't have it in them to spend the next 20 or so years engaging in gorilla warfare with frenchies. And like I said previously, Quebec, being east of Ontario could be a dick and block trade shipments going in or out through the Saint Lawrence. Turns out it was much easier to just let them live by their rules so long as they acknowledged the Brits as top boss back then.
