A simpler builder as I wait for people to post in Reforged. Second priority. System rules below:

http://pastebin.com/hDMENCEw

The year is 706 AUC, a year that might be eventually declared forty-eight years before the birth of Christ. The brilliant orator and esteemed general Gaius Julius Caesar has proclaimed himself the Dictator of Rome after besting his rival Pompey at the battle of Dyrrhachium, striding triumphantly into Rome. The Senate have granted him a Triumph, in name for his military victories in Gaul and Egypt. They are the most spectacular ceremonies the world has ever seen. A Gaul Chieftain earns his freedom by gutting four lions with nothing more than a bronze dagger - a Luperci from the College of Pontiffs tears a full Contubernium limb from limb with naught but his mind and invocations to the Wolves of Rome - A Minotaur gouges the eyes of a troll until the mighty beast finally ceases movement - Two manned Triremes clash on the flooded field of Mars.

The spectacle is the most magnificent performance Rome has ever assembled - and, by extension, that of the world's as well. Far below the glorious stand where Caesar himself, flanked by his loyal friends in Mark Antony, Brutus, and Octavian, a shadowy face watches, in the jam-packed, noisy stands of the poor. A man shouts of Decadence as one of the sparring Greeks impales a valiant slave with a trident, prompting the men around to boo his words out before returning to the ear-shattering din of cheers. Reluctantly, the shadowed face is made to tear itself away from the glorious spectacle. This visit to Rome was temporary, and the figure cannot afford to stay to watch the conclusion of Caesar's Triumph. A ship leaves for the far-flung colony it calls home - where a Class IV Arena, three degrees separated from the venerable grounds of Rome, awaits.

Slinking out of the crowd, a hood is pulled back, a face no longer in shadow. Who is underneath?

Name: [What do they call you?]

Gender: [A male, common to Arena grounds? A female, rarely seen in the bloody waters of the Colosseum? A figure shrouded in mystery?]

Fluff: [How did you get to the plebian's benches of Caesar's Triumph in Rome? How did you come to join the Arena? What do you fight for?]

Slave/Free: [Freemen enjoy the luxury of being able to choose their own fights at their leisure, but are entirely alone in this world, paying for their own lodging, provisions, and training. Additionally, freemen rarely have any useful contacts. Slaves are bound to their Master's whims, cannot choose their own games, and may be executed if they underperform repeatedly. HOWEVER, their lodging and provisions are provided for, and anyone important enough to own Gladiators, even in a Class IV city, likely has their own training grounds and many useful contacts.]

A short explanation because I'm not sure I cleared it up:

There are four classes of Arenas. They are the creatively named Class IV, Class III, Class II and Class I. Class IV contains eight 'cities', mostly modestly-sized but important locations such as Capua, Cadiz and Nicomedia. Class III contains four essential and large cities in the Empire: Carthage, Smyrna, Corinth and Ephesus. Class II contains the two great cities of the Empire that are not Rome - Alexandria and Antioch. And Class I, of course, is Rome. Your goal is to get to Class I, become the Arena Champion, and successfully defend your title in the Inaugural Games, or a Triumph. Doing so will win you the game.

Name: "Smasher"

Gender: Male

Fluff: One day in the furthest, filthest, most shit stained backwater of the Empire the soldiers of Rome thought they encountered a troll. But this was not a troll, it was a man. He had the size of one, the strength of one, and the ugliness of one but it was definitely human. It spoke no words any Roman or Barbarian understood, and killed anyone that tried to bother it. After enough men died trying to capture him a few at a time, a sizable force was assembled to catch him. By the half way into the day, 7 men were dead and so were four horses, bodies smashed pulp by a tree ripped from the ground, and the thing was full of arrows, javelins, and a hundred blade cuts and bleeding the snow red in streams of blood but still it fought on. It took two days of fighting to tire the thing enough, because it was a dull beast and didn't know better, until finally they brought it down and chained it in the thickest iron chains they had. "Smasher" they called it, for it preferred to pick up the biggest heaviest thing it could find and smash whatever it wanted. They forced it back to health, made it eat whatever they could feed it, and sold him as a prized slave.

Slave/Free: Slave

Owner Fluff: "Salvador" as he is called is a wealthy shiek from the east (or the south, no one is sure) from afar who likes to gather "freaks". Spectacles of nature, wonders of the world, especially those he can display for glory, and a bit of gold, in the fighting pits. When he saw this monster, the largest still-human thing he had laid eyes on (as well as possibly the most hideous) he was determined to have it. But what good is a giant hulking pile of flesh that wouldn't die lying idle in a cage? Far better to train and send it to fight!

Gender: Female

Fluff: Alyssa was formerly a sacred vestal virgin, she is a virgin no more. she lost her way, and the punishment for soiling her body was death. she could not escape it, so she asked not to be burned alive but to become a slave and die at the mercy of the gods at the arena. they granted her request, and made her a slave to a wealthy Roman prince, and said she would serve Rome by serving her princes and entertaining her people by fighting in the arena, and live as long as the gods would allow her to survive. she places what's left of her life to the gods now, wondering how long they would let her live. the only skills she ever practiced daily as a priestess was running and using a bow, as part of a sacred play where she played the role of Minerva. but with how fragile her body was, she wondered if the gods care would run short.

Owner Fluff: Felix is the son of a Roman general, and wealthy enough to own many slaves and slavegirls as to not care for any of them, not even a former vestal virgin, and enjoys sending them off to fight as much as he does using them himself.

Name: Aquilina Scarleto

Gender: A lass can fight as well as any man.

Slave/Free: My heart beats for freedom, not for enslavement.

Fluff:

Born a daughter to a Iberian chief, Aquilina Cangrejus was raised up with the blood of barbarians turned noble. Her clan were a loyal ally of the Romans, siding with them over Viriatus over a century ago. Even so, in spite of the Romanization of the Cangrejus lands, a hint of their way of life remained, which would be enjoyed by Aquilina in her youth.

One of the traditions would be the 'spars' between the young nobles and the chief's guards. It was during these 'spars' that her skills would be shown, for she had a unnatural swiftness as she fought, blows brought against her flew past her as her own strikes struck home. However, the attacks that did clash against her form took her down without much fanfare.

Yet, even with her childhood, when she reached the age of adulthood, she turned her back on her former clan. The reasons for such actions remained unclear to everyone but her and her father. Adopting the new clan name of 'Scarleto', she travelled the northern Mediterranean with aimless wanderlust, aimless, until the Triumph.

It was then, watching the Triumph that she knew what she should do. Boarding a ship back to the Iberian peninsula, so that a legacy of her own will be carved out, to stand the endless test of time.

Name: Tiberius

Gender: A Male

Fluff: Tiberius, or as he was known, Julius Gaius Tiberius, was once a Legionnaire in the Military of the Republic, in particular he was a young Milite in the legion of Marcus Licinius Crassus, having just joined in time for Crasuss's campaign into Parthia. He was at Carrhae, and underneath the shields of his brothers he withstood the endless barrage of the Iranian horse archers, and watched as the General rode off to meet with the Parthians at their camp, never to return. The now leaderless army aimed to return to Rome, despondent at the loss of their general and the spoils that would come from the war, but happy to keep their lives. Yet the Parthians would not allow them to even have that, harrying them throughout their retreat. Julius was part of a group separated from the main army, was eventually captured along with some of his comrades and sold into slavery at the city of Mesopotamia. Here we was noticed by his masters as being good with the blade when one of them attempted to beat Julius, only for him to bring the man's sword to his neck. Figuring he was more trouble than he was worth, he was sold to the local arena to fight and hopefully die there. But it was not to be, with his skills from the Legion, Julius was able to win, and with it he drew the attention of other lanistas looking for fresh meat. He spent several years (during the civil war) traveling around the edges of the Republic fighting in whatever city his current Lanista decided was a good place to make some money. It was on a trip to Cadiz that his cycle of servitude and forced fighting came to a end, and Iberian Hill men raided his Lanista's caravan, slaughtering man. It was on the gladius of a fallen guard that Julius cut the ropes that bound him and sprinted off into the woods, with only the rags that he was clad in to his name. He traveled along the edges of the roads, keeping to the wood line till he reached Cadiz, he was weary and battered, but he was free, but still the Arena beckoned, and with no other skills of note to his name, Julius was forced once again into the arena, but this time he was fighting for himself.

Name: Titus

Gender: Male

Fluff: Titus was an orphan. A street rat. From a young age he stole and snuck about to survive. Then he learned to fight, as there were many who would steal from him, or try to do other even less savory things. Sometimes he won, sometimes he lost, but he never took a bad enough wound to cripple him. So he grew older accumulating scars. It all changed when one day he stole the coinpurse of a legionnaire. He'd done so before but this time he was caught, then he was beaten. Then after that he was sold into slavery. While he was sold cheaply, the slave broker took a look at him and decided he could make a profit by selling him as a fighter. While the buyer was of a more discerning taste and Titus did not net as much money as hoped, the broker netted a good profit. Titus himself could care less of his price, he only wishes too survive and enjoy the pleasures he either earns or steals.

Slave/Free: Slave

Owner Fluff: Titus is the owner of the second son of the Meneus Family. Titus is one of three slaves purchased as a test by his father to see if he could manage house assets properly.

Name: Agrobrigos Nantu Gallaeci "Inanis"

Gender: Male

Fluff: First born son of a Gallaeci Chief, Nantu was trained from birth to be a leader. The Romans have been encroaching further and further into Gallia and some of the tribes decided to act. A few of the Gallaeci tribes, including Nantu's, the Astures, and Cantabri gather together and started raiding the roman lands for women and material. Things were going well until they ran into an ambush set up by the Romans. Nantu had been chosen to represent his tribe's warriors to cement his place as heir, and so he helped rally his men and the nearby units. They fought bravely, but it was clear the Romans had the tactical advantage and so many of the celts started killing themselves to prevent capture. Nantu would have done so as well, but he felt as heir, it was his duty to ensure his fellow celts would reach the afterlife free. While a few of his tribemates helped him, they all fell and he was the only one left of the entire raiding force alive. Nantu was put in chains and then moved with a caravan to a city in the southeast, if his calculations were correct, to be sold to the highest bidder. He was lined up on a stage with a bunch of other slaves, including blacks from the south and other celts from north of the pyrenees, and was soon bought by a Roman woman named Magistra Patrona. On the boat to Cadiz, Nantu became increasinly more saddened, looking more solemn than he normally did. He would spend the rest of his days serving food and preparing room for Romans, he rationalized, until he arrived at the Womans home and was explained to what he would be doing. One of the instructors there explained that she was a Roman noble and that she bought us to fight in gladiator arenas. Suddenly, Nantu's mood immediately lifted, his life would not be meaningless and menial. He started thinking, surely they would give him rewards and eventually free him if he fought well enough. When that happens, he would use the Romans against other Romans and take revenge on what happened to his tribemates. They think him a weak and pitiful savage, they will soon learn that you can't break a stallion of Epona so easily.

Slave/Free: Slave

Owner Fluff: Born to a noble family, Mania Aquillius Tusca was a woman in a predominately man's world. Mania was ambitious, however, and didn't let this stop her from becoming successful on her own. She understood how the people craved the blood sport of gladiators more and more and became a patrona, buying several villas across Rome and acquiring the best trainers and equipment for her slaves. What was supposed to be an average day at the slave markets turned into a rather interesting and lucrative experience. There was a somewhat exotic slave, but what was most striking about him was the utter apathy he seemed to exude. When he looked at Mania, he didn't look at her as male, nor a female even, but rather just a person there. She had seen depressed and despondent slaves before, but this was something she had never experienced ever. She immediately bought him and so far the transaction is paying off, he will take her far.

Renown: Unheard of (Beast - you are seen as a true monster, and expected to act the part. Acts of savagery, brutality, backwardness and dishonor will earn you favor, while actions seen as civilized will earn a negative reaction from the crowd.)

Contacts of Note: None.

Current Location: Apamea, Class IV

You are a new entry to Apamea, one of the furthest east cities held solidly by the Empire. Strange music from desert merchants plays throughout the entire day, and the followers of Jupiter pray alongside Berbers who wander in with treasures of the sand seas. Imperials are not the tallest of races, but they stand taller than the men of Syria, and Smasher is even more of a freak in their presence. The Sheikh displays you proudly, entering into the city with your hands in custom-made bindings of high-quality iron, legs locked together. Eccentricities: [Young Heart - Scarleto is young, vigorous, and has something to prove. This has two effects; the first is that, despite her brash nature, she is attracted and unstained, making appeal to most crowds notably easier. Second, her willpower in life-or-death situations is immense, and once per battle, she can force herself from [Unconscious] to [Wounded], or negate a hit that would bring her to [Unconscious] or [Dead].]

Renown: Unheard of (Noble Savage - you are a barbarian, but one seen as noble, and an ally of Rome. As such, the crowd expects you to carry yourself with nobility and grace, expressing mercy and intelligence in your fighting. However, they will tolerate (and secretly expect) some dips into savagery and barbarism, and as always, they love blood.)

Current Location: Cadiz, Class IV

You have boarded back to Cadiz, the primary Roman settlement in Iberia, with naught but a simple cloak, the tight leathers used frequently for princely armor by the semi-civilized peoples of Iberia (As opposed to the metal-leather overlay frequently used by Romans and the cloth or furs favored by tribes further North, though the Auxiliary and Vexiliaruses of the legion favor similar leather bodysuits, albeit with a skirt instead of pants), a pouch with your last three silver Sesterii, and your ancestral iron Falcata; sharpened and weighted precisely throughout the ages to strike with the same force as an iron Gladius, yet quicker. With barely enough money to rent a boarding house, you approach the Arena board, and see what upcoming fights are offered publicly…

You only look at the ones that seem reasonable.

A FIGHT against ONE captured GAUL! VICIOUS, BARBARIC, TERRIFYING!

A FIGHT against TWO runaway SLAVES! While mere domestics, desperate men fight with a true fervor!

A FIGHT against ONE captured NIGERIAN! SAVAGE, BRUTAL, FEROCIOUS!

No details about any of the contenders are included. You should sign up for a fight and then do something else with your time; you could ask the Arena Master if you wish for more information.

Name: Tympanum

Gender: Male

Fluff: A Gaul possessed of swirling black tattoos and a magnificent yellow beard, Tympanum is so named for his most curious habit of rhythymnically strumming and striking nearby objects when idle. Tympanum was, likely, a warrior of some renown among his tribe, but such renown did not stop him from being knocked out cold by a legionnaire's shield boss and dragged back to Rome for the slave markets. Snatched up for his battle prowess before he was snatched up for his exotic hair and endowment, Tympanum bides his time and kills whoever he may need to kill until he can earn his freedom and return to the forested north.

Slave/Free: Slave

Owner Fluff: A retired Centurion, Flavus Crispus Gaiolanus has purchased Tympanum and multiple other slaves, all from conquered nations, to help kickstart his bloody success in the gladiator circuit.

Current Location: Athens, Class IV

You arrive in Athens, panting and out of breath from both the fighting and the run. Athens is, though small in population, one of the most important cultural centers for the Empire; it is here that the civilization that defines Rome was adopted, and as such the Romans hold their Greek brothers with the utmost respect. It is as good a place as any to begin a new life; or to make your own. As you approach the arena board, you feel a sense of freedom; not just because you are now a free man, but because you may choose your own path. For the first time, the money you earn will go to you - and perhaps one day, they will fly your colors in the stands of Rome.

You look at the Arena Board….

A FIGHT against a REBEL HOPLITE! CUNNING, VICIOUS, EFFICIENT!

A TWO ON FOUR of TWO ROMAN MEN are required to face FOUR MACEDONS who believe themselves superior to the legions! Prove them wrong! Or, right?

A FIGHT against a MYSTERIOUS EGYPTIAN! A drifter from southern lands, of an ancient empire!

Eccentricities: [Prince(ess?) of Gaul - You are nobility in your homeland of Gaul, and while the respect of your countrymen might not be useful here, the training certainly is. You gain the ability of [Gaulish Charge], advancing 3 meters and launching an aggressive attack at 2 AP + half the normal cost of swinging your weapon. Additionally, Agrobrigos's feminine appearance causes the crowd to be slightly more favorable and enemies to slightly drop their guard in underestimation.]

Renown: Unheard of (Barbarian - you are seen as a barbarian to the crowd, and as such, acting bloodthirsty, vicious, and merciless will earn you favor, while displaying advanced tactics and intelligence will decrease it.)

Contacts of Note:

Equipment: Barely Modest Cloth [0 Armor, no AP cap], Celtic Champion's Blade (Bronze(STR7)[5 AP to swing, 7-10 DMG]

Lodgings: A Destitute Bunk (This lodging is beyond terrible, and caps your individual renown enormously. Additionally, it makes training very difficult. Acquire prestigious items, recognitions, titles, recognizable notes, and the like, or better lodgings, to increase your renown cap, and better facilities (or access to them from your owner) to increase the speed of your training.)

Current Location: Cirta, Class IV

You arrive at Cirta - the second most important Roman colony in Africa, next to Carthage. The city is windy and horribly hot, but not altogether unpleasant, considering how little your cloth weighs on you. Lounging in the decrepit, stone-hard bed in your owner's slave quarters, it is broken to you that you are scheduled tomorrow to fight a Nubian who had attempted murder of another slave, and are given until then to prepare yourself as you see fit. They do allow you back your family's blade - bronze and far heavier than a Gladius, with a poor tip for thrusting, but an excellent cutting edge. Not before you get to the Arena, obviously.

Memphis is an ancient city, outgrown of its ancient buildings and full of once-great monuments. It is almost easy to sleep on your hard bunk…

Current Location: Nicomedia, Class IV

You aren't from Nicomedia, but your owner is, and the arenas of the ancient, religious city are as hungry for blood as any other - though they conceal their bloodthrist better than most, and their factions are more civil. You're told that you'll be fighting a former Legionaire, which is a terrifying prospect, until they add on that the man is a slight coward, an Enemy of the State as you are. Which shouldn't be too bad… right?

A pastebin containing combat maneuvers:

http://pastebin.com/svL1RGih

Signing up for fights is a free action, as is asking the Arena Master about fights. You get 2 actions per non-combat turn, and all combat takes one turn. Shop prices are variable per city. An As is equivalent to roughly a quarter, a Sesterii is equivalent to roughly one dollar, a Denarius is equivalent to roughly five dollars, an Aureus is equivalent to roughly one hundred dollars. An Iron Gladius, the most standard weapon in the Empire of the most standard material, costs roughly 40 Aureus.

Additionally, he is inherently a shock trooper, and can choose to gain all the AP for his next turn as many times as he desires in battle, going into active dodge and losing his next turn once finished.]

For action one Titus does the standard rogue knife work exercises. Rapidly switching his grip rapidly stabbing between his fingers, and the like. Things he saw hard men do as games and bet money over.

For dodging practice, he rolls about, jumped and the like. Practicing how quickly he could shift and throw his body about so he wouldn't get hit.

A slight reference guide on fantasy elements on the world:

The College of Pontificates control the official state religion (headed by the Pontifex Maximus, leader of the Cult of Jupiter) of Rome, as well as all sanctioned, legal magic in the Empire. There are around thirty mages, apprentice and otherwise, under the College; they are exceedingly rare, especially so in the Empire. The most respected and powerful are the Augurs, who hold the magic of divination in their palms, interpreting - and, sometimes, changing - the thread of fate for the benefit of the Empire, as well as speaking with the esteemed dead. Lower than that are the Luperci, of the Wolf Cult, to which Mark Antony belongs. As that of the sacred animal of Rome, it was decreed that they ought be the ones to possess the warmages of the Empire, shared in conjugtion with the cults of Mars and Minerva. They can rend the earth, tear men limb from limb, and turn whole villages to mere ash in the wind with a word; they are, therefore, feared, respected, and admired.

The far north of Germania, Ruthenia, and Scandza are inhabited by terrible and terrifying beasts that have stymied Roman efforts at colonizing them for the present. In Germania, hard men who feel no pain or fear in their savage love of combat live in an infinite forest, amidst ever-shifting alliances between each other and strange tribes of slender, thin beings that age cannot touch, masters of warfare as a result. The combination of the two have made advancement north something like impossible, despite their constant infighting.

Ruthenia is home to a small cult of horrid men who have blighted the land, experimenting with the forbidden arts of soul-binding; a bastardization of the noble practice of Necromancy that involves shackling a soul to a mortal coil and forcing it to move and act via runic sigil. This vile act has allowed them to dominate the province, though the Pontificate has more than once for a subjugation of the region to stop these desecration, and to tear down the infamous black towers of Ruthenia.

Scandza is shrouded in myth and mystery; an absolutely brutal land, where not even the Germanics or Elves see fit to colonize. Few tribes of the most hardy and dangerous men live here, fighting deathly chill, enormous direwolves, and Frost Giants alike. Only Minerva knows what else lurks in the wastes of Scandza…

Updates will come as I hammer out more details.

1-2. "Smasher" has spent his whole life trying to get away from these short, annoying things. To be captured by them and forced to be so close to so many makes him ANGRY. Not very different from in mentality from a gorilla in a nearby cage, hands and legs still bound, he still attempts to beat his chest, clang his chains, roar, and rage at anything that comes close or looks at him. Trying to intimidate them to leave like he has so many other of these short things.

Despite the lack of a proper training facility in the day before his fight, Titus is able to train surprisingly well in his bunk, nervously practicing his knifework and ensuring he's limber and prepared for the fight. He feel he's gained about 10 Combat Skill Points (though the lack of proper room and facilities means his gains are relatively small) before a guard of the Meneus family arrives in the slave quarters, clad in yellow and red. The man gestures and grunts about it being time in Roman, and you follow him outside. The trip through Nicomedia's streets is uneventful, and no one takes notice of you as you're brought to the Arena, though you notice people streaming in as you're moved to the Gladiator's Right entrance. You're one of the first fights of the day, it seems. Titus spends a while in nervous anticipation, fondling his Pugio, before he's pushed out towards a gate, the noise of a crowd cheering growing louder and louder as Titus spills out onto hot sands, opposite a muscled and well-tanned, but terrified man who holds a Pugio - his made of iron. It's exceptionally easy to find a slave willing and able to teach you the fundamentals of the Roman language; slaves tend to help one another as well they can, and all of them are fluent. A southern Gaul in the ranks understands your own language well enough to begin tutoring you in the lifted, but strong speech of Rome, and he is a suitable teacher. The basics of Latin are surprisingly easy to grasp. You won't be speaking highbrow anytime soon, but you catch the gist of basic phrasing from the other slaves in just hours, and being in a Latin city will teach you the rest of the basics soon enough. (Change your Language to rank 2 and add Broken Latin as a language.) However, you are totally unable to acquire any information about your opponent, being forbidden from leaving the slave quarters. Up until you are brought to the Arena proper that is, woken by a Tuscan guard in the middle of the next day and brought over to the Critian arena, through a mess of clay-fired buildings and dotted villas in the Roman style. A midday attraction, you are quickly shuffled to the leftmost gate and brought through onto absolutely searing sands, staring across the field at a pitch-black Nubian - slight and unimpressive - holding a short sword that bears marked similarities to a Gladius, save for it being made of copper. This shouldn't be terribly difficult. [PM me when ready to start combat]

This number is a little too high, I accidentally used a higher price table. Think 10 Aureus for an Iron Gladius, 20 Aureus for a healthy slave.

After being forcibly thrown out of a smithy, then a bathhouse, then a higher-end Hopsitia, Scarleto resigns to inquire at a Capoune, the 'Beatus Hispanus'. The only notably achievements of it are having some private rooms and hosting the scum of four separate cultures, frequented by Gauls, Romans, Spanish, and Mauretanians. Immediately, Scarleto is are overcome with the stench of awful wine, vomit, piss, and blood, and some heads turn as you enter. The owner agrees pretty readily to hire the former noble on as a barmaid, provided she can 'tolerate the customers', for a private room, food, and a miserable stipend, which sounds fine enough, until she starts actually working. Just wading through the stench is hard enough, but before she's ten minutes into bringing out food a customer swats Aquilina's ass hard enough to nearly make her drop the tray; there's two more firm squeezes slipped in before a fight breaks out amongst the noisy drunkards, which Scarleto, another barmaid, and the inn's bar barely manage to stop and throw the offenders out before it spreads. Between periods of humiliating comments and aggressive gropes(of which her shiny and tight leathers help little), a Moor throws up on Scarleto's foot, a Gaul nearly stabs her while babbling in his own language, and a native urchin almost manages to steal her money-pouch - fending off the overcrowded mess of patrons rapidly becomes more difficult than actually serving. Despite being signed up for a two-on-one fight just the next morning, it's a mercy when her shift finally ends, and she's allowed to retire to her room. Even through that, the din is overwhelming, and the smell persists; not to mention the soreness of her body makes sleeping in the tiny room and hard bed practically impossible. The fact that the spainard's ass is practically covered in stinging red handprints just adds to it.

Change Lodgings to Inn Room (This lodging is awful, and seriously caps renown.)

Add as a note under Lodgings: [Barmaid - Working as a barmaid is a careful balance between managing insults and gropes with avoiding drunken punches. The work is humiliating, difficult, and pays little. But it is still work. 1 Denarius and 12 Sesterii per out-of-combat round.]

Sliding up her leathers is not intolerable the next morning, but a wince is unable to be suppressed as they snap close. Entering the arena as a freeman is much less degrading than doing so as a slave, and Scarleto is able to verify with the Arena Master before being made to go through the gates of the Arena - coming out alongside scattered sands, facing opposite two weak, slight plebs with black hair and blank eyes, the Pugios in their hands likely the first time they've held a weapon. It is quite telling that they look scared against a single woman in skintight leathers who smells like piss, though there are still two of them, which is cause for some concern, [PM me when ready to start combat]

There are few in Athens who do not speak Latin by this point; the respect of Greek culture from Rome is reciprocated by the Greeks themselves, and the noble families of Athens, though not replaced by Romans, speak Latin and fraternize fully with their Italian brothers. However, some aspiring merchants and tradesmen still lack the ability to speak fluent highbrow Latin, and occasionally hire on Romans for diplomatic affairs, to take stress off their backs. Inquiring around and looking on various public post boards, it's not terribly difficult to find one such merchant. He's hardly rich, but the brown-haired Greek is respectable, owning a well-run scroll shop on a fine address. His grasp of Latin is shaky, so he's willing to pay you a decent sum to interpret when Roman customers come in; work that is neither taxing nor time-consuming, and pays quite well. As you prove your respectability, he gives you a small bonus to sleep in the dorms of the local inn for this night, but tells you to pay for your own lodgings after. Add as a note under Lodgings: [Translator - Translation is a profitable enterprise, if you can find someone willing and able to pay who needs one. 2 Denarii and 12 Sesterii per out-of-combat round.]

You find, donning your worn-in leather-and-iron Auxiliary armor in the morning, that you have nowhere near enough money to buy even a buckler. A Pelte, the ancient shield of Greek skirmishers, won't cost you much - a merchant has one in good condition for a mere 20 Denarii, but the small copper-and-fur shield won't stop much. It is far better than having one useless arm, however. You make a note of this price and move on, meeting at the Arena at the determined time, where you are shown to your entrance. You kill the time before speaking with the man who will be your partner for this particular match; a hardy-looking Roman like yourself, gray-haired but covered in scars that prove his worth. He is gruff, but affable, and his Spatha and Lorcia Hamata give him an appearance of vague command. Two is not enough for a shieldwall, so he carries no shield. This is not supposed to be a grand performance or main event, but a side skirmish, so roles will not be necessary, however. The veteran strides alongside you as the gate opens, leaving you opposite a small gang of swarthy Macedons, thankfully armed with their Macedonian kopis instead of the long spears a historical performance would have given them. Though aggressive and unafraid, they are clad in cloth and seem physically unimpressive, so you and the Veteran feel decently confident in a victory. [PM me when ready to start combat]

After asking some quick questions, you are pleasantly surprised to find that one of Felix's slaves sharing your quarters is a former poacher - a man who goes by [Cassius]. He agrees to give you some pointers for your upcoming fight, and is permitted to, for these purposes, go into the courtyard of the Villa with you (which Felix has not granted *you* permissions of), where you spend the better part of the day learning about the anatomy of wolves, where to shoot to disable and kill with the kind of bow you're using, and how the Wolf moves and behaves. Cassius is clearly experienced, and even with just a day, you feel much more secure. Gain eccentricity [Wolf Hunter: +10% to-hit-chance, plus +1 Min and Max DMG when fighting wolves. Train with Cassius to upgrade or broaden this trait.]

Additionally, Felix happens to be with the guards when they rouse you next morning, and you quickly petition him for a weapon of some sort to defend yourself at close range. Felix considers this for a moment, then apparently decides that it would make for better entertainment, as he draws a Pugio from one of the guard's belts and hands it over to you. Add Iron Pugio (STR 5)[2-3 DMG, 2 AP to swing]. The walk down Capua's streets to the arena is quick and efficient, one passed frequently by the house's guards, and you are brought late in the day's games. The crowd hisses and roars so loudly you can hear them past the gate as the Wolf is brought out; they know that any who faces against the sacred animal must be an enemy of the state. Damascus is a city with an enormous deal of history, and one of Rome's most recent conquest; the great city was annexed by Rome less than 20 years back, by the hands of the now-defeated Pompey. But who cares about that, while you're here, rotting in a prison? In a deluded haze, you make a bet with the master of the prison; you satisfy the Prison Master in the arena, and win your freedom. He laughs, entertained, and says that if you can win fifty fights of his choice or be granted freedom by a Dux or other important figure, you can be free. He leaves from your cell, telling you that he'll schedule a fight for the very next day.

You hear word he's put you down for a fight with an Araby Freeman tomorrow… you will need to prepare.

Despite the lack of a proper training area - a fact that significantly impedes your progress - you're able to do basic physical training that requires little space, like situps and pushups (though weapon training with a spear proves entirely impossible). Note [2 ticks] next to your CON.

Some slaves jump at the opportunity to learn a few snippets of Latin, as Gaiolanus's pasture consists mostly of completely fresh slaves from Araby, Mauritania, and Gaul. You spend the better half of your second day teaching basic communication to a few of them, earning you a solid favor amongst some of your fellow slaves. Note [Fellow Slaves] as a Contact, as they'll be notably more favorable to you, especially if you continue lending a helping hand.

The guard, as always, comes on time, taking a small group of slaves - including you - to the Arena of Memphis. You're a midday attraction, and some other slaves go before you; you watch as some viciously decapitate their opponents, screaming in victory, and others are dragged back through the gates, covered in bloody wounds or outright missing limbs. A man at the gate calls your name… [PM me when ready to combat.]

Smasher has no problems with that. The loud shrieks and terrifying roars from his cage, rattling against the bars, causes visitors to the Sheik's villa to scurry away in fear, a mixture of dark natives clad in gold and purple, and Roman men in simple but elegant white. The Sheik, on the other hand, is delighted, clearly amused by the prestige that such a vicious creature brings to him. You have gained some favor with the Sheik, as well as 10 out-of-combat skill points. The one who seems to control this cage, you notice, does not shy away from you; a portly but brave man, of middling height. He stands nearby as men escort you in hard irons to the arena of Apamea, where you are quickly ushered past the leftmost gates into a fight - the two pathetic figures across cowed at Smasher's giant physique. I wake up laying in my dark cell, shivering against the cold unmerciful stones that cage me in. Thoughts are clouding my mind -

Was I dreaming, or only hallucinating?

Is it day or night outside?

Is this still all real?

Am I going mad?

I punch against the floor with my bare fist, waves of pain shock back through my arm to my body, i can feel the warmth of blood dripping from my fingers. Oh, this is real enough.

I have been so long in the dark its almost worth going to the arena just to see daylight again.

I manage to stand up, barely. I try to look through the darkness into the black corridor "Welcome… To the arena!" I shout. My voice echo, no reply. I laugh, maybe they will leave me here, maybe its a joke, there is no arena, the master is just playing me as he always does. He is leaving me to die… I punch against the bars, the metal shakes and vibrates but I keep punching until its wet of my blood. "WELCOME TO THE ARENA" I keep shouting with all my throat again and again after delivering every fist. After hours my hands are numb from pain and wont do as I bid them, my body is too weak. "arena…" I can only whisper this time as i fall back unconscious

What a surprise, he's Irish. (As far as I remember, it's been a while since I made one.)

Name: Incaendium (Birth Name: Straif)

Gender: Male

Fluff: The peoples of Britannia are seldom seen in continental Europe. This is due, in part, to the fact that it hasn't been conquered yet. Even then, only a few will set foot upon the land to the West. This is a shame, for the isle is fertile, green, and an ideal source of slaves and grain. However, there are a select few from the British Islands who travel to the continent in search of fame, power, or wealth. Incaendium is one of these travelers. Hailing from the warrior tribe which Ptolemy would dub the Eblani, between the rivers Liffey and Boyne, Incaendium went first to Britannia, in wanderlust, where he traveled the land over, from the land of the Picti in the North, to the land of the Damonii in the south. From there, he made his way to Gallia, where he was encountered by the returning forces of the victorious Caesar. Knowing that even with the prowess in combat which living in a warrior culture instilled in him, he could not resist any more than a few Roman soldiers, he was taken as another slave, and given his epithet, Incaendium, the Latin word for a wildfire, for his wild and red hair. After Caesar entered Rome, the slaves of his train were given away, or sold. Incaendium was given as an exotic gift to an equestrian family, who he served dutifully as a manual slave for a time. There, he learned a few words of Latin, in addition to his native Gaeilge Ársa. One day, not too long ago, he was accompanying one of his masters into town, escorting him to a fine, upstanding establishment with many classy women residing within. The pair were accosted by a pair of robbers, carrying long knives. The equestrian (in disguise, to protect his reputation), did not have his sword with him, and his slave was unarmed. However, Incaendium grabbed a nearby fence picket, and forcefully tore it from the ground. He hurled the stake at one of the assailants, piercing his breast, before charging at the other, bowling him over, and beating him to death. After the shake up, the equestrian decided that a better profession for his slave would be as a gladiator. In a matter of days, the gael was shipped off to the nearest class IV arena, to earn his master coin, and himself fame, or even freedom.

The Eblani are one of the many tribes of the Isles who believe that to do battle clad in naught but the favor of the gods is the highest honor. However, while forgoing clothes is honorable (And good for your health! Fabric in a wound can easily cause infection.), spurning shields is simply stupid. The Eblani, therefore, carry shields of vastly varying sizes, ranging from stout blackthorn branches strapped to their forearm to huge oaken round shields, bossed with iron. Spears with long, broad, leaf-shaped heads are common among the Eblani, and they are adept at using them in the thrust or the cut. Incaendium is nothing if not traditional, and in his roamings, carried with him only his food, his waterskin, a traditional spear, a medium-sized shield, simple shoes, and trousers (Which he would swiftly remove if ever he needed to fight). All of his personal effects are lost now, having been confiscated by the troops of the great Caesar.

Slave/Free: Slave

Owner Fluff: The Caparii are an equestrian family, solidly in the center of equestrian status. Their industry is twofold: They manufacture garum for export to different parts of the Republic, and rent out extra space on their ships to merchants and travelers. Primus Caparius Piscus is the pater familias of the Caparii, and the architect of their move into the garum market, in which the Caparii have a monopoly. For his clever cornering of the market, and the product his factories produces, he has the cognomen of Piscus. Above all, he is a profit-minded man, and has an extraordinary mind for numbers and economic abstraction. He sees Incaendium's service as a gladiator as an investment, and hopes that it pays off, for he may lose a valuable laborer.
