The King Is Dead; Long Live The King!

File: 1468042440472.png (3.61 MB,3072x2048,3:2,Kingdoms.png)

fbe53f No.28067

Kingdom: (Choose one of the five playable kingdoms described in the fluff posts - Syrrah, Sul, Sapshan, Mianda, or Holan’s Mianda.)

Family Name: (Your family’s surname.)

Dynastic Traits/Fluff: (Dynastic traits are custom bonuses that always apply to the current head of dynasty and/or their personal demesne. You begin with 2, and may acquire more during gameplay, at the GM’s discretion. At first, fill this out with a brief fluff of your family and its foundation and/or recent history.)

Dynastic Succession Laws: (The process by which your family traditionally and legally chooses its new rulers after the death of the existing one. The typical system is Agnatic-Cognatic primogeniture - i.e. the eldest son inherits, if there are no (appropriate) sons, the eldest daughter instead. Unusual systems may lead to diplomacy penalties with peers of the realm and vassals.)

Head of Dynasty: (Player Character):

Name:

Gender:

Head of Dynasty traits: (These can be positive and negative, and will prescribe bonuses for specific actions. E.g. A Strategist character will confer a bonus to troops they command in combat. An honest character will be trusted more often by npcs, etc, etc. Each character may have up to 5 traits, again, there is no exhaustive list, though I may eventually formulate one. You may choose 3 traits for your first head of the dynasty. Two may be good, one must be bad. E.g. Brave (Good), Clever (Good), Greedy (bad))

Immediate Family:

(A list of your immediate family members. This is your spouse, sons, daughters, siblings, and grandchildren, primarily used to manage succession. You start with a spouse, who you may assign 3 traits - again, 2 good, one bad.)

Notable Courtiers:

(Similar to immediate family, these are people unlikely to inherit, either extended family, or non-family members in your court with important roles. Leave this empty.)

Treasury:

Holding 1: (You can name your lands here)

Size:

Terrain:

Resources:

Culture:

Faith:

Buildings:

Tax:

Levies:

(Leave this entirely empty, however - denote a starting location somewhere in your post, that is within your kingdom)

Holdings have a size value, that determines how many buildings it can contain.

The terrain type helps me decide what random resources might be there, and may effect events and battles.

Resources refer to noteworthy resources contained within the province, such as copper, tin, salt, and aegisteel.

Culture denotes the language and cultural traditions of the people who live in the holding. If they are at odds with that of the ruling dynasty, it may cause friction.

Faith denotes the religious practices and rituals of the people who live in the holding. If they are at odds with that of the ruling dynasty, it may cause friction.

Buildings is the buildings that are in the holding.

Tax is the income generated by taxing the people of the holding each turn.

Levies refers to the armed men and women one can expect to raise when mustering troops from the province.

Gameplay:

At the start of each turn, each holding will generate incomes that are added to the family treasury, and any ongoing expenses will be deducted from the family treasury, unless they specify their intent to withhold payments ahead of time.

Each turn, each player may give up to 5 orders, rolling a d100 for each. Some actions will roll against an appropriate DC (needing to roll equal to or higher than,) in order to succeed. Others will begin a process automatically, and the roll will determine how much progress is made.

Adult, capable characters may be assigned to an order (one per order, one order per character each turn), and their traits may effect it, if relevant, so remember to assign characters - including yourself, if you wish, to orders. Beware, some orders have the potential for sickness and injury - think carefully about who undertakes them. Sometimes the most skilled character might be too valuable for a dangerous task… Sometimes you might desperately need that task completed.

Each turn, the GM will privately roll dice to determine things like global - or localised events, as well as certain important minutiae - such as whether you or your spouse have children, or whether you, or members of your family or court die of ‘natural causes’. Whilst it is entirely possible to have a family and stable succession without making efforts towards it, you should beware being heirless - if you have no legal heir of your family to succeed when you die, you lose the game.

The Old Miandan Empire is on its knees. After decades of internal strife, regional secessions, and raids from Tukhousa pirates and Gellir horsemen, an empire that once spanned two-thirds of the known world has been reduced to a single archipelago, a civil war for what little remains raging between two claimant emperors, the boy-emperor, Nadisso 'The Unready' holds the Great City of Mia, and the island of Anar, whilst his uncle… Perhaps, claims the boy is a bastard child, and has raised the arms of Sadissa province against him, in a war that threatens to drag all the surrounding realms into its orbit.

North, and northwest, the three peninsular kingdoms of Syrrah, Sul, and Sapshan enjoy a recently won independence from the Miandan empire. Syrrah is a verdant, jungle realm, hard to travel for unwary foreigners, and rich in abundant luxuries not seen elsewhere, including cocoa, several unique citrus fruits, and valuable medicinal herbs - and poisons. North and east of Syrrah, across the Dokyr Mountains, lies its neighbour, Sul. Syrrah and Sul share a language and faith, if not a way of life. Sul is a kingdom of two extremes, most of its sparse desert terrain is roamed by far-reaching nomadic clans, whose chiefs pay but a pittance to the king in taxes, but are expected to muster large warrior retinues in times of war. Otherwise, they meander across the baking sands, subsisting mostly on the produce of their goats. However Sul’s capital may just be the most valuable trading port in the world, home to a vast fleet of merchant ships moving back and forth, transporting Syrri luxuries out, and Miandan and Tukhousa produce in, as well as being a vital waypoint for any merchant headed through the Cyan Straits.

Across the Nassar sea, east of the Syrri peninsula, lies Sapshan, the oldest, richest, and… Most loyal, of the empire’s old territories. The last to demand its independence, Sapshan became a free kingdom without needing to spill a single drop of blood. Her kings are but one generation removed from Magistratos Arkos, the first king, who had demanded that independence, and was himself, a Miandan commoner from the Bejeweled city of Mia, who had clambered as high as a man could climb in a lifetime, being appointed governor, and ultimately, king. Her people dine on the bounty of the kingdom’s namesake river, the Shan, which flows mightily through the peninsula from its source in the Metris range that bound the kingdom’s northern border, south into the Eternal Ocean, towards Anar. Her floodplains feed Sapshan, they feed Asyll, the capital of Sul, and they feed much of Anar, too, in times of scarcity. Grain alone does not make a kingdom, no matter how much Sapshan may have, and it is home to the world’s most valuable potters and glass-blowers, as well as the secret of coloured glass, a necessity for any true Duatosi cathedral.

You will play as a chief or lord in one of these realms, squabbling for power and influence, or, serving as a placid, loyal retainer, if it so pleases you.

Mecratheen is a low-fantasy world with 9th-11th century technology levels. Whilst magic exists, it is not something that can be controlled or understood… Yet.

Kingdom: Sapshan

Family Name: Liberia

Dynastic Traits/Fluff: The Liberian Dynasty was, originally, merchants. Raising from humble beginnings trading mostly in grain and lumber from rural towns, the family wasn't very noteworthy to anyone. Eventually though they moved on to crafts, and started making their fortune trading with the glassblowers, both supplying them with materials, and selling their finished work. This was done during the time of Rammel, arguably the shrewdest and most successful member of the family. Under his leadership the family's power and wealth grew, but, as the family got more involved with the cities, so some started to pick up an interest in culture, and in books. Rammel's second son was one or the most obsessed with learning, spending most of his part of the family's wealth gathering a vast library of texts. A couple of members of the family frowned upon this waste of the family wealth, but Rammel encouraged him, he thought that if they were to interact with the city folks then they can't be the uneducated small town merchants they used to be, they needed to change. And so, when he laid on his deathbed he had an idea, while his oldest son was expected to take his place, Rammel thought him too dim witted to lead the family, so he made a declaration. Whichever son or daughter of him who think themselves worthy may challenge his appointed heir to a game of wits, and whoever wins this game of wits will be the undisputed head of the family. When he finally passed, his second son took this opportunity to rise as head by easily besting his older sibling in a game of wits of the older brother's choosing. And with this succession the family changed, and Rammel's legacy was secured, as all future heirs valued sharpening their minds in preparation for the next succession. Since then, the Liberia family has been granted nobility, and is now ruled by Tymora Liberian, who beat both of her brothers in games of wits and now rules the family's lands unopposed.

Dynastic Succession Laws:Agnatic-Cognatic Primogeniture, with a tradition of challenge allowed to pretenders before the heir takes his/her new title where any child of the previous rulers may challenge the rightful heir to a game of wits to prove themselves more worthy. The challenge may only be done once, right before the heir takes the title, and the results may not be disputed.

Kingdom: Mianda

Family Name: Morsen

Dynastic Traits/Fluff: The Morsen family rose to prominence early in Miadan's rise from a small kingdom to an Empire. The Morsen line was raised to nobility for helping institute Mianda's first laws. Morsen being the man who helped make sure harsh but fair laws were instituted across the land. Ever since this noble house has had a close tie with the laws of the land. This in times of relative stability served the house well, gaining it much power and prestige. Now with Mianda declining and strife all around, the house's fortunes have turned sour, as the law has taken a backseat to politics, and the Morsen's strict adherence to the law makes them be seen as a liability to possible allies and as easily manipulate able to their enemies. This in turn has cost them much of their former lands and strength.

Alric is the current heir to the Morsen dynasty, which is currently the weakest it ahs ever been. It has lost much of it's land, power , and prestige from political snafus and poor judgment on the part of his father, who while a good man, was not wise in the ways of court or law. Alric intends to see the Morsen dynasty ascendant once more. His forebears and children deserve no less.

Kingdom: Sapshan

Family Name: Deatus

Dynastic Traits/Fluff:

The Deatus Family springs form an old line of military commanders who were eventually rewarded for their service when Sapshan was integrated into the Miandan Empire. Tasked with keeping Sapshan within the Empire and the people under control the first Lord Deatus opted for a completely new and innovative strategy.

Instead of military repression the new policy heavily focused on the integration of Sapshan culture into the traditional understandings of what it meant to be Miandan. Over the centuries old faith and culture molded into a new vibrant mix, tolerant of both the old and the new.

Ever since the first days the Deatus have lent their ear to the common people, doing their best to keep the many different people who serve under their rule content. While their demeanor may not have granted them great prestige or wealth over the years it has allowed the family to lead a peaceful life void of war and intrigue, for one knows that if the Deatus turn you away they have good reason to do so.

It's another glorious morning in Poet's hold, it's time to improve things for the people of our lands, and to improve our wealth. But with both of Tymora ruling alone with her husband there is need for more capable individuals. Perhaps a cousin, or some distant aunt or uncle? Yes, the decision is made to send letters to all of them, in the hopes that a capable member of the family will step out of the shadows and join Poets Hold.

1 Survey our lands for undiscovered resources [Tymora Liberian]

2 Patrol our lands to clear out bandits and ensure the safety of the people [Harmalt]

3 Send letters to distant relatives seeking their aid in court

4 Begin building a shipyard to build and service trade vessels

5 Ask merchants about rumours from our neighbours

1. This morning Viteus Deatus awoke with an interesting new concept in mind. He would have the workers deviate some of the water from the river and into a new field. They would set beautiful plants there and a new garden of exotic beauty would be created for all people to enjoy.

+ Construct a new garden using water from the river

2. Of course the people under Daetus rule were reasonable and well mannered acting within cultural customs, however thos plagued by poverty would not always be able to abide the law. An expansion of the elite pike armed Daetus Primus would surely be able to handle situations were words alone could not suffice to sooth angry tempers.

+ Expand Pike Units

3. Even though Viteus enjoyed interactions with his fellow Lords it would seem they had not met in quite a bit. It was time to purchase some good food and drink, hang up the tapestry and invite nearby nobles to join the festivities in order of whatever Duatosi holiday was coming up.

4. Of course Deliah was quick to note that having to purchase wine was an unnecessary cost that should be prevented in the future by setting up Varum's own vineyard. While Viteus did not know a lot about wine he was well aware that disagreeing with his wife on matters of money was as pointless as trying to stare down a dead fish.

+ Build a Vineyard

5. The river was a great potential trading route. Of course Daetus had used it for centuries to move goods through the country quickly, however with the construction of a new dock they would be able to do so even more efficiently and hopefully make Varum even more attractive to traders.

+ Build a dock

Dynastic Traits/Fluff: Creative thinkers and builders of tomorrow, the Demosthen dynasty is credited with having wisdom seemingly woven into the folds of its family tree. Kingdom: Mianda

Family Name: Atreides

Dynastic Traits/Fluff: The Atreides are known for their house words: "Semper fidelis" which is the old High Mianda phrase "Always faithful". Since the inception of the empire the Atreides have been close to the royal family, as bodyguards, advisers, generals and even lovers. This bond stems from the ancient friendship of the first Emperor and the founder of House Atreides, boyhood friends turned Emperor and Commander. Even in these troubled times, when the long since fallen empire continues to fracture even more, House Atreides stands firm to support the True royal house, whoever that may be.

1. First things first, if the impending war with Holand is to be won, we'll need men, and for men, we'll need money. Money is garnered through trade and production, with the grasslands around us, I want a vineyard to be constructed so as to begin the production of grapes and wine, a Miandaian classic.

2. Since we're on the coast as well, we should have ample access to sand, and with that , glass. Begin work on a glass-works and find some artisans to staff it.

3. Check on the state of affairs in the peasantry, see if there is anything we can do to help them, for helping them helps us in the long term

4/5. Finally, I want patrols in the hills and valleys to root out any bandits that hope to prey upon our empire's weakened state

>+[Fiery] and +[Impulsive] reminder

1-2 Goldreach requires a place to collaborate ideas, share discoveries, and contribute to the pursuit of knowledge. A beacon of education for all. I, Lord Cyrus, will begin drafting ideas related to such a project.

>Begin research into the idea of +[Higher Education], which would eventually lead to the construction of a +[University].

+[Men of Science] +15

+[Head of Dynasty Traits & Observatory] +10

3. Our bountiful olive resources should be put to good use. Expand our olive groves to better reap the green prizes of the soil.

>More Olive Groves

4. It would also do well for Goldreach to expand its cultural influence, and what better way to do so than through producing marvelous works of glass art? I order the holding treasury to issue Khond to the glassblowers guild in order to encourage the growth of the trade.

>Spend Khond to encourage more people to pick up the glassblower profession

5. A large amount of our citizens suffer from near and far blindedness, being unable to see objects from closeup and far away. Since the eye sees objects better in the light, and glass is able to manipulate light to a degree, perhaps the answer to their affliction lies there? Our observatory may also benefit from such an improvement.

>Begin reseach into the idea of +[Optics], leading to the invention of +[Eyeglasses]
