This is going to sound terrible but the best advice is to live near the studio. I have enough experience in this field but the money and security aren't good so you can rarely afford to move out and live off it.
It's also only a fun job when the dev goes wrong and you have nothing to do. I've been paid hours before to just watch videos on youtube and drink tea.
