I have an uncle in the military he was meant to retire a few years back but couldn't handle civvy street so went into training squaddies,

And no worries man, I don't mind talking about it. It varies massively depending on your mood, the most common aural hallucination is what I call 'The Heathrow'. It's the only way to describe it. It's like the sound of a busy place like an airport. In my head. 100s of Layers of voices. All talking at the same time. Nothing drowns it out. You try and make some of it out but it's all bleeding into each other. It's draining as fuck man. A common visual hallucination is seeing shit move. So you'd be sat there and the wall will start elongating. Or the clothes on the floor move across the room. Then there's the stuff like when a bee talked to me. But I was properly far gone at point and on no meds.

that's mental. I ask because I used to see and hear some weird shit when I was younger. I'm pretty sure up until recently I did the whole seeing things move that weren't actually moving thing.

Yeah man, it's probably more common than you think. Although I wouldn't go spurting it to people. Literally the first thing they did was section me. Despite knowing it was caused by the SLE. With any trace of psychosis they need to assess your risk to others. It's fucking humiliating man.

It gets boring as fuck man. There are some very interesting people in those wards though, people with real life experiences and stories to tell. We were allowed to smoke on the front, so that's where most of us would be usually. There was this guy I remember vividly, he'd been in there for 6months already, and you'd only ever see him at meal times and having a cigarette. He was a major depressive and self harmer and had gouges all over. When I asked the others about him they just said 'Oh don't bother he won't talk to you he just sits there on his phone' but I went over and sat next to him and just started talking. He ignored me, and we went in. Next cig I did the same. And again. And again. Telling him jokes, and rolling him cigs. Talking about music, about the voices I heard that day. After the 8th day I sat down, and about 5 minutes in he turns to me and says 'H-h-how m-m-many animals can you fit in a pair of B- boxers? ' 'I don't know Stephan?' 'A C-COCK AND A-A FEW HARES!' I pissed myself. Not only was it the first thing he'd ever said to me, but it was a genuinely funny joke! After that he'd start talking, he had a terrible stutter man, but was so sweet. When I left he was devastated so I gave him my zippo as a goodbye gift.

that sounds like a cool story. I'm guessing the staff are shit though? And what's the accommodation like?

I'd probably keep to myself if I ended up in there. I don't think I'd enjoy talking to people like that.

The staff vary shift to shift. The day staff were much better than the night staff. And usually I don't talk to anyone man. But I think you kind of construct your own little society almost, it's really fucking weird. It's almost like the thread. There's no consequences to telling someone your fucked up thoughts. As they're in the same position. No judging. Accommodation wise you get a cot and a ligature proof sink. The sinks look like faces, and for someone with psychosis I thought it was particularly cruel man. You also get a some storage for your clothes and shit.

No. Those are communal. And you have to let a member of staff know when you're about to shower. Sometimes it's not 'convenient ' for them.

Aye. There was a proper fucked up gypo woman in the room next to me and on my first week I left my room unlocked (you have to ask specifically for it to be locked by a member of staff as you can only lock from inside) I was in the common room and she walks in, wearing a pair of bunny slippers, I realised they were mine, she'd gone in my room, into my bags, and stolen them, so I got up, asked asked for them back. She started screaming at me 'MY DADDY RAPED MY ARSE MY DADDDDY RAPED MY ARSE!' then nutted me square in the fucking nose man, blood everywhere. Pounced on me, pinned me down and pressed her thumbs into my eyes. She got dragged off, doped up. And put into seclusion. They moved her room to the other side of ward after that so I didn't have to walk passed her.

The staff retrieved my slippers though.

I came out on heavy anti psychotics and not hearing shit as often man, so it was good in that respect, and the therapy for the people who needed it was very good, the support afterwards is great too. Basically once you've been in hospital you're treated with more care by the MH teams. They put more effort in helping you out with getting things like medication changes and therapy and stuff. But the experience overall was not a good one. I mean, there are very ill people in these places man. You know someone's tried offing themselves when this alarm goes off and the staff start running. You know it was successful when you can't leave your room for the next few hours.

that's so fucking grim. They should be putting plenty of effort in and getting you the right meds without having to go to a place like that in the first place.

How long were you in? I honestly think I'd fucking stab a staffmember or something if I had to put up with that. It sounds so fucking horrible.

I was in there for 3 months. Aye man, guess once you got used to the pecking order it wasn't so bad. Like that mental Irish bird who stole my slippers, as she had been there like 9 months, she was at the top and people knew to not mess with her. They did stuff like art and music therapy which was a nice change of pace too. And EVERYONE loved it when occupational therapy came. They'd sort us out with like a ping pong tournament or nature walk or some shit. It was like the one time time of the week everyone seems to actually be happy.
