Guys, I have these two friends and they told me they want to make a puzzle game. Neither of them have any programming experience. Having failed my first year of CS I know what a challenge programming can be.

I set the bar low and told them to learn python and found suitable libraries. They haven't bothered to learn any python nor read the documentation I provided. I told them to hold off UI design until they understand the libraries and their capabilities but they have spent all their time (2 months) drawing pictures.

Now they have declared they are moving to the Unity engine because one of them watched a YT video where the guy made a game using no code. I told them they still need to learn programming but now it will be C++ which is more difficult. They said that's fine, like they completely ignored the words coming out of my mouth.

The moment one of them said "game engine" I immediately quit in my head.

I feel fairly confident they are going to fail hard. I have decided to just let them do it if they aren't going to listen to me anyway.

What do you think their chances are? Can a couple of idiots with zero experience make a game using Unity?

Yes. But it won't be a good game.

why are you even asking? looking forward to gloating over their inevitable failure?

unity scripting is done in c# and javascript

zero

While I am a little annoyed I wasted my time and effort trying to help them, I am more concerned they will actually succeed and I will have been the idiot who was holding them back by focusing on programming. The chance to gloat however would be nice.

Thank you, I meant C#.

they don't sound like friend the way you're describing them.

also chances are that none of you defined any goals or outcomes, so even if they half complete a tutorial they at least got a learning experience out of it.

if you really want them to suffer then hype up their idea until they think it's a good idea to quit their jobs or put money on the line. then the chances of financial success is virtually zero.

also first year CS is your bar for difficulty? I understand it can be hard for some people, but they're teaching programming to middle school kids these days. it is not hard to pick up if you go into it with the right mind set, especially at the level needed to program a game.

>none of you defined any goals or outcomes

I tried and laid out a plan to increment in steps in learning. I tried to explain that some things are hard and they might not want to do them. One of them literally scoffed and said "I will just do it, no matter how hard it is." Having quit personal projects before, I found this a little irritating.

>if you really want them to suffer then hype up their idea until they think it's a good idea to quit their jobs or put money on the line. then the chances of financial success is virtually zero.

Oh god help me, I actually cackled out loud!

>also first year CS is your bar for difficulty?

Unfortunately so, and I am the "programmer" of the three.

>they're teaching programming to middle school kids these days. it is not hard to pick up

I think we are not seeing eye to eye on this. When I refer to programming as a "challenge" I am not trying to infer that it is unattainable. The example I gave to my friends is Usain Bolt running in the Olympics. Obviously, he is just running, a skill anyone can pick up, even children. But to assume you can get that good at running with relative ease is just wrong. I have met some very talented programmers who make games and they are far beyond my skill and I know to get to their level would be a massive sacrifice of time and dedication.

I was happy to take this on with them when it was just python and maybe pygame to do something simple. But to jump straight in with Unity and C# and aim for a AAA game as a first ever project just seems arrogant to the point of retardation in my opinion. Sorry if that offends anyone who has taken that route and stuck with it to success, I honestly congratulate you.

I've seen people like that. Normally it can take up to 5 years until they give up. I've only seen one guy who didn't give up. I'm in my 2nd year of comp sci. We're probably around the same age, so here's some story:

>be 13

>just started programming

>it's all fun and rainbow

>a group of people wants to make game

>we meet up

>no one does anything and play Call of duty

>they kept on talking to me about the game for half a year

>be 14

>friend(let's say bob) wants to learn programming to make game

>tell him to learn C(like I did)

>he fails

>be 15

>some dude wants to make game with me

>he doesn't know shit but say he want to do the graphic

>teach him basic drawing

>he give up

>be 15

>some dude want to make the next facebook

>tries html

>he give up

note: he didn't fail at life, he may be not the founder of facebook, but he's studying server and shit like that in college

>be 16

>some guy wants to make game

>show him c++

>he try hard

>really hard

>didn't practice enough at home

>he give up

>be 16

>bob still want to make game

>go to his place

>this time I teach him python

>he gave up

>be 17

>bob still insist

>bob now want to do graphic

>I teach him basic drawing stuff

>he give up after a month

>be 18

>bob haven't finished high school

>bob still want to make game

>got to his place with python again

>he give up faster

>bob is now on twitch instead

>be 19

>bob just got the motivation and told me about it

>bob is almost going to finish high school after he gave up

>bob wants to learn programming

>again

>python

>been 2 month since I haven't heard about it

bob has been trying for 5 years.

bob only played game and gather unoriginal ideas.

i finally said enough, im seriously thinking about dropping my job to work fulltime on the game, and i have been bugging him so much he actually done some shit recently

I made one or two decent games in flash with no programing experience whatsoever.

I even managed to make a dynamic inventory system using just move frame actions and change x/y positions.

It was a fucking headache to figure out, but it was satisfying as fuck to pull off.

hope those guys manage to surprise you. You never know.

I don't like to consider myself an all knowing being, but truth be told I am rarely surprised by anything. If they manage to surprise me, I might die from shock.

On a separate note, well done on the flash work. I knew a couple of guys from my entry level IT course who went on to get degrees in "Flash design" instead of computer science. Seeing the state of flash today, I bet they have regrets.
