If I wanted to play DDR arcade games on my PC, what's the best way to play them?
Should I emulate the original arcade versions, emulate the home ports of them, or just find the songs from them and download them for Stepmania?

probably stepmania. DDR kind of died after extreme. and until 573 digital emulates properly i say ps2 and japanese mixes or stepmania is your best bet.

Really depends how much you want to invest i personally dislike soft pads ,if you are a beginner go for any cheap one on ebay /amazon you probably won´t notice anything.
if you want a good one get one of this https://www.amazon.com/Dance-Revolution-Energy-Deluxe-Playstation-2/dp/B000GHG0BA look around the internet for the best deal.
If you decide to buy a Metal pad. For the love of god stay away from anything that is official "DDr" or stuff from "Precision Dance Pads"

When I check eBay for soft pads, I get tons of listings with the exact same images.
