Hey guys, i was recently cleaning my closet and found my old ps1 along with a bunch of pirated cds circa 1999-2000, the memory card didn't work for shit and some cds were all fucked up but i managed to find some that were working, now im sitting here with 4 games and a working ps1 with a modchip.

What are some essential ps1 games to have? I have a lots of 700mb disks i can burn.

Also, the only working games i have are tony hawk 1 & 2, rayman 2 and worms armageddon, out of like, 40 something games.

I know tomb raider, spyro, crash, FFVII, medievil, megaman legends and the tronn bone game are musts, but, what else?

It really depends on what genres you like if you ask me. The Playstation had a number of great games, but not all are going to be liked by everyone (I'd post the old Playstation chart, but looking at it again a few days back I think it needs some revising and the section on emulation is either wrong or outdated according to some; might revise it later this week since that's something I've taken to doing lately).

As far as general must plays, you might want to consider adding Castlevania: SotN, Metal Gear Solid, and both Oddworld games if you haven't played them before. Also might want to do some double checking as far as Spyro 3 goes, if there's anything particular you need to do when downloading, as that game had a form of copy protection that took people time to get around back in the day; not sure how much of an issue it is anymore. Might be a good idea to double check if burned copies of particular games actually work before taking the time to download and try to play through them in general though, especially for multi disc ones (especially if the issue might be on the later disc or discs instead of the first one).

Anyhow, if you're interested in JRPGs (considering you mentioned FFVII; the Playstation had a fair amount of enjoyable ones besides that, and not all of them made by Squaresoft), maybe consider giving the following a try?

>Alundra

>Arc The Lad Collection (SRPG)

>Brave Fencer Musashi

>Breath of Fire III and IV

>Chrono Cross (admittedly hit or miss)

>Dragon Warrior VII (possibly the longest JRPG you'll ever play between the amount of content and dialogue pacing)

>Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, Tactics (mileage may vary with VIII; IX's generally well liked even with its flaws)

>Front Mission 3 (SRPG)

>Grandia

>Legend of Legaia

>Legend of Mana

>Lunar and Lunar 2

>Parasite Eve

>Persona 1 and 2

>SaGa Frontier 1 and 2

>Star Ocean: The Second Story (Also on the PSP as Second Evolution)

>Suikoden I and II

>Tales of Destiny and Eternia/Destiny II (Also the PS1 remake of Phantasia with fan translation patch; games get more refined over time going from Destiny to Phantasia PS1 to Eternia)

>Threads of Fate

>Vagrant Story

>Valkyrie Profile

>Wild Arms 1 and 2

>Xenogears

Nice, thanks, all games are welcome, i used to have a wide selection of games (basically all genres) but that was a long ass time ago, and most disks either peeled off or got these little spots that look like little bullseyes, the last time i turned on my old ps1 was in like 2004-2005, i was amazed it still worked today, shame the memory card was all fucked up (shit was mad catz anyways, not original), but it doesn't matter since original cards are easy to come by around here.

I know im getting doom, quake, medievil, klonoa and monster rancher, but wat else?

fucking ps1 had a SHITLOAD of good games and hidden gems, i want em all.

Well, I'm currently trying to grab images to work on revising the chart, but if you want the old one, here it is. Should still at least be able to get some more ideas even if the formatting seems off and the alphabetizing not exactly there (some of the main reasons I'm choosing to work on it).

Well i'd advise you to make the images a little bigger because i can't see shit, and some are too pixelated to tell what they say.

But overall, i can read most titles.

A friend of mine made me a list, i dont have those many disks to burn so i think i'll resort to either burn a few (like 20) or just emulate everything, i'll post the list on the next post.

Yeah, Definitely planning on having bigger images. Looking at some of the original versions of charts I've been working to revise (PS2, Gamecube, etc) they tend to have formatting issues, size issues, and in some cases seem like they were made in paint as opposed to a more advanced program (which might allow for guides to be set). Main issue I'm having though is that compared to finding decent cover images for the PS2 and Gamecube, the fact that the Playstation has the covers double as the manual means it's been somewhat hard finding decent covers for some games that aren't scuffed, faded, or beat up.

Not sure if you have a PSP with CFW, but they make a pretty decent way to play downloaded Playstation games due to having built in PS1 capabilities (thus most games play pretty damn well, at least in my experiences). Only real issues are a lack of L2/R2 buttons and a right analog stick for games that need them, but from what I'm aware of you can remap the control functions. Just need to find or make eboots of games before putting them on the system (and in the case of fan translated games like Tales of Phantasia or Persona 2: Innocent Sin, apply the translation patch before converting to an eboot).

I don't have a psp, never really liked them.

Also, for games that take multiple disks, how do i check if they were burned correctly? Do i just stick disk 1 in, check if it works, reset and do the same with disk 2?

I mean i did that on my gamecube with the MGS version of it, but no idea how it is with a ps1.

I guess i never really gave a shit about testing disks back when i was a kid, as i just put em in and played away.

Also, fucking FF VIII-IX have 4 disks, holy shit, i though FF VII having 3 was enough.

I'm not entirely sure. I mainly just use my PSP for PS1 games I don't already own physical copies of. Have you tried looking it up?

On the other hand, there's currently an emulation thread up on /v/ right now. Perhaps try asking there?

>>3617

>Also, fucking FF VIII-IX have 4 disks, holy shit, i though FF VII having 3 was enough.

Arc the Lad Collection has a total of five discs, but then again, it's four different games in it rather than a single one spread out over them all. Might also have some "making of" stuff too, considering it was localized by Working Designs and they seemed to like doing that sort of thing with Lunar; not exactly sure what Arc the Lad Collection actually came with beyond the games themselves.

My issue is unrelated to the emulation thread, and asking for help on /v/ is just silly, gonna try asking halfchan's /vr/, it's more active than this one.

And if everything fails, i guess im just going to try and burn a game with 2 disks and see if both disks work.

Well, give it a try. I was mainly just thinking that doing a bit of research on how well a burned version of a game actually plays is something that ought to be done before spending hours playing through the first disc. I've heard some people say before that with some games like Wild Arms 2, the second disc doesn't play when burned (effectively meaning you've wasted a bunch of time with the first disc, especially if wanting to jump right in to disc 2 to see what happens next), though I can't personally say much about if that's the truth or not; don't really have a way of playing burned PS1 games myself. Just something to keep in mind.

Good luck though.

Dragon valor is one of my favourites.

also looney toons racing and Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour, fire bugs are fun racing games if you are into that.

3d platformers like gex, croc, kolona and less known jersey devil.

2d platformers like metal slug, strider 2(remake if you can) and of course heart of darkness.

legend of dragoon is good rpg.

army men series, air attack is my favourite.

m&ms shell shocked is a crash bandicoot replica, still good though. there is also hugo and medievil.

ninja shadow of darkness which has insane cheat codes and still maintains its difficulty as a platformer.

twisted metal series.

one of my favouritesfor co-op 2 player action is the firemen 2.

and many others, but this is what comes to me right now.

of course crash, spyro.

also soul reaver legacy of cain and tai fu wrath of the tiger.

you can easily see what my favourite genre is.

Namely just looking for ones at a somewhat decent size, not too faded, bent, or creased (as I know manuals can sometimes get), and preferably scanned at the proper angle (in other words, without it being slanted and having bits of it potentially cut off, or part of the scanner showing through).

Already got the RPG, Action, and Fighting sections handled. I suppose the main help would be if you see something noticeably missing from what's currently on the old chart (starting with what's already there for the most part so I can start getting the layout done; need at least a little something to work with for that) and worthwhile, go ahead and post a suggestion to add it (along with a decent cover image for it) and I'll look into adding it.

I could also use some decent box scans for Lunar 1 and 2 (if Lunar 2's still worth adding; seen some amount of debate over whether the Sega CD version makes the PS1 version feel really inferior; thinking it's probably still worth having since I'm not sure how easy to emulate Sega CD is in comparison to the Playstation). I've seen a few of the actual manual/covers, but I was thinking having the actual outer box ones might look better. Unfortunately most of the scans I've found thus far have been of the covers being really beat up, and I'm not sure they'd look all that good on the chart like that.

On that note, I figured this would prove an issue sooner or later, but anyone have any recommendations for how to handle covers for early PS1 games that only saw a longbox release rather than a jewel cased one? Seen a few where there's some fanmade ones done more in the length-to-width ratio of the regular jewel cased ones, though those aren't exactly "official" covers at that point.

Got the formatting as well as game transfer from the old chart done. Thinking I might have to rethink the tab sizes since even this much is just barely under the 8MB limit at 89% of the original file's quality (more used to what charts I've done so far having the cover width be a fair bit smaller than the height, thus able to fit more games in the same space).

Anyhow, if anyone wants to make some suggestions for more games to add that are currently still missing, or if you can by chance find and post better cover/manual art scans for some of them that aren't exactly up to par (preferably at 250 pixels or more in width, unfaded US ones where possible; trying to keep things more cohesive overall), that would be helpful.

I don't mind adding licensed games if they're actually good (and from what I've seen the PS1 had a fair number of those that were; should probably also add Toy Story 2). I've heard good things about both PS1 Harry Potter games so I'll add those to a list of things to add. Still, I'm not sure about that Yu-gi-oh game. That's not saying I won't consider adding it further down the line. I mean if it's actually fun and other people can vouch for it, sure (I understand not every game is one everyone can enjoy), but most of what I've heard of it makes it sound like a rather frustrating experience (such as the game blatantly cheating, if I remember correctly), and not exactly in the enjoyable way.

Well, here in the US (I figure things might be a bit similar), prices vary. I think I got my fat maybe five years back (sure doesn't feel like it was that long back) for about $40, and the slims were $30 or so at the time. Not exactly sure what they're at these days, but I might have seen some fats a while back for $50 or so at game focused stores. PS2s are really fucking common though, so chances are you can find them a lot cheaper at pawn shops or goodwill/savers or whatever your equivalent is there (yard sales might be a decent possibility too). That does leave at issue though of whether the system will work in the first place or if you've wasted your time/money though; I think some of the more game-focused stores can get away with charging a bit more since they're more prone to testing systems and potentially replacing now faulty parts before putting them out for sale (depends on the store of course; my favorite one even offers a year long refund/replacement policy if a system they sold breaks on you), and I don't exactly have the best faith in places that don't specialize in media to actually make sure the stuff they put out works, or has all the cords needed. Just my thoughts on it.

I'd also recommend doing some research into which PS1 and PS2 games you're aiming to play on it before settling on what model of system to get; There's some differences between the Fat and Slim models, and while compatibility for most games should be fine, some have issues on particular models to my knowledge. Here's this; used to know of a more indepth list but it seems like it got purged from the web (it was an old forum post somewhere; thread might have finally been deleted):

What about Ogre Tactics/Tactics Ogre for the strategy section or do those not count because they are ports of snes games?

I've honestly been debating on how to handle those, considering Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen is in English on both the SNES and PS1 while Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together has the SFC version fan translated and native PS1 and PSP releases. I really don't see that much discussion on any of them but the PSP version of LUCT (which seems to get a lot of love from people); as such, I'm not really sure as to how the various versions of them compare with each other. If all of them are worthwhile for their own systems, I'd be happy to put both of the PS1 versions up for those, but some people have rather vocal against bothering with including games on these that are either worse than a prior version of the game, or that have a better version on a newer system.

Does anyone like this game? Or have recommendations of similar games? I'm playing through Vagrant Story again for the first time since it came out and I'm having a blast.

The speedrun record for this game is just over 2 hours, so I think I might take a shot at it.

Front Mission 2 English Patch Fix

https://mega.nz/#!dGIF0JgB!P5d-3TDWciZ5AF9xYG6RAA5ttYWbiUrz-piZlU9hmEw

The "final" Front Mission 2 English Patch was sadly not only a partial patch due to technical difficulties, but it also introduced some bugs, most notably missing sound in FMVs and some distorted sound effects.

This fix of the English Patch aims to remedy this and some other issues as well.

The closest system I've seen to Vagrant Story is Parasite Eve, but that's just from quick glances at gameplay.
