Is there a good starting point to go through old Win95/98 games? It's an area I haven't gotten into yet, but I'm sorting out my PC soon so I was going to pirate WinXP. Or would dual booting it with Win95 be preferable so games work properly?

This game would be amazing if remade, just re-render some higher-poly models, up the quality of the huds and fix the controls (they were trying to go for a Nuclear Throne style controls but had to deal with a lot of limitations from back in that era).

Oh and I guess non-interlaced cutscenes.

The Postal series would have stuck around and received a far better future if they hadn't gone down that route. Think of the difference between Blood and the more cheesier DOS fps games.

>win7 64bit not backwards compatible with win95/8 games.

The "64bit" bit is probably one of the main problems. 16-bit code can't execute in 64-bit Windows, and with Win9x being a 16/32-bit hybrid, most of its software is more or less crippled without 16-bit code being able to run.

Considering running win9x natively, what is the latest hardware you got Win98SE to run on and function properly? After 2005 drivers became a huge problem (foremostly video and audio - there's not much of a gaming experience if you're stuck with generic VGA video and no sound).

You do realize you can right click on the game's executable and you can choose to run it in "compatibility mode" for any older version of Windows you like… I'm just sayin.

Also, if you're gonna talk OLD school computer games you need to talk about Leisure Suit Larry, The Incredible Machine, Conway's Game Of Life, the Hugo series, Blackstone Chronicles, Day Of The Tentacle, the Magic Candle series, ZZT games, etc, etc.

The best keyboard of the era… and still the best keyboard of today, is the Mtek K104. If you don't have one of these boards… man you ain't nothin!

Compatibility mode rarely works right for games that actually give you trouble though. A lot of games can actually be really picky when running on old OS's and hardware too.

Goofy Golf (Demo)

There was some game with a few different mini games. One was frogger-like? One had four colored skulls? I think yiu had ti solve matgs problems and pick a skull? I recall one being black and others being colored. One had some skeletons but it crashed due to file corruption for me.

There was some other flat gridded game with bright colored blocks, not Tetris at all (very static?) but it reminds me of Tetris.

Rats (killing rat infestation with a bunch of weapons)

Please excuse the vague descriptions, I was 6 or so.
