I have a list of games that I make sure to do a play through every year. Some I can beat in a few hours, some takes me a few weeks. But, I always try to make a point to play them once a year.
1. Final Fantasy 1
2. Dragon Warrior 1
3. The Legend of Zelda
4. Metroid
5. Kid Icarus
ITT: The games you play annually.
inb4 nintendofag
inb4 it's dragon quest!

I go through Ys I, II, and IV (Dawn of Ys) for PC Engine.
III used to be on there, but it's not that much fun to go through after one or two times, and at a few hours it's a mere formality anyway, so I don't do it.
I'm on a two year cycle with NES and SNES Zeldas, and I'll go through Super Ghouls and Ghosts every few years. Super Mario 2 and 3 also.
My very favorite games I barely ever touch because I guess I'm "saving" them in a way. So I play less of my very favorite games than I do of other games I like.

More like every 2-3 years, but:
Baldur's Gate 2
Final Fantasy 4,6, or 7
all get heavy replay in the RPG department.
More like once every 5 years I'll play through Mario World 2, Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Star Wars, etc.
Good new RPGs are few and far between, so the old ones get heavy replay. Same deal with platformers. Whereas still healthy genres like Strategy pretty much never see me dig out old stuff. Well, relatively. MTW 2 is nearly 10 years old at this point.

>>1650I've run through the whole saga with fighter, blade, cavalier, and fighter-cleric. Those were characters I liked enough to get through the mediocre expansion pack with. I often consider myself done after Watcher's Keep, which I've done quite a few times alone with various builds, the most fun of which was fighter-thief. That was my most recent and I stopped it because I'm running the same character in a multiplayer game I started with a friend.
Something I've been wanting to do is an all Dwarf custom party. I've never played as a Dwarf MC, even. I also need to finish the multiplayer game I started. We are on the final chapter of BG 1, so we really haven't even gotten to the good part yet.

>>1657Jesus, anon - you make me feel bad that I've started and dropped so many builds half way through. I even forget what my last MC was - I actually picked up Montaron for the first time ever, and got too engrossed in sending him ahead and stealth-killing everything.
BG was one of my first PC games, so I can never tell if it's just blind nostalgia that keeps me exploring every nook and cranny all over again, but it warmed my heart to hear that you go through the whole thing every time. So many folks seem to dislike the original game after BGII added so much content, to the point where they think the first eight or nine levels aren't worth their time.
>That was my most recent and I stopped it because I'm running the same character in a multiplayer game I started with a friend.LAN?

>>1723I hated Baldur's Gate the first time I played it. The pathfinding made me furious, there's not really any story to hook you, and you seemingly get chunked in seconds whenever you fight anything. I guess I was just expecting a D&D Fallout game. But I guess its grown on me. I gave it another chance after BG 2. The world is really fun to explore and the combat isn't hard when you actually understand how it works. I suspect that people who don't like BG just don't get it. It is a really fun game with great atmosphere and tons replay value.
>LAN?We're playing over Hamachi, which I guess is technically a LAN. I'm playing it hands off because he's never beaten it so I'm just along for the ride, I believe the current party is Fighter, Fighter-Thief, Branwen, 2 of the EE characters (the mage and sorceror), and Imoen.

>>1732>there's not really any story to hook youDifferent strokes for different folks. I always thought Gorion's death was enough of a hook, but loved that you could up and wander off to do you own thing instead.
Compare that to the opening of BG2. Christ. I think it worked well as a tutorial, to get a handle on your build. But it wasn't half too much work every time you started.
>We're playing over Hamachi, which I guess is technically a LAN. I'm playing it hands off because he's never beaten it so I'm just along for the rideI am now a jelly elemental. The only time I've ever convinced a friend to play through it, Hamachi repeatedly shit the bed, and then his rig refused to run even the vanilla edition once we'd fucked off all the mods.
I was so looking forward to having someone else driving…

>>1878I don't think I could go back to the original versions anymore solely because of the mouse wheel zoom feature. Real time scaling is awesome.
There's a new challenge mode campaign, black pits, which I've never bothered to do, and they added some new NPCs. Mainly in BG 2, this is cool if you want to play an evil party, since they mainly added those since there weren't too many.

The lootbar has spoiled me so I could never go back. They added UI enhancements, a few extra kits, some items, NPCs and quests relating to them.
I think their added content fits to the games well but some of the items and NPCs are overpowered. Dorn Il-Khan and his sword, Hexxat, the drow sorcerer and the Stupifier just to name a few.

1. Gnome
2. Some kind of fighter (don't remember class selection in BG1 very well, only that it's pretty bare-bones 2ed) with either a sling prof, if don't suck in there, or a short bow.
3. You'll need a fair amount of Dex and Con probably Str as well if you don't want your guy to stay behind meatshields all the time.

Well it's not like you have a choice with regards to ranged weapons in that game. Unless you like to reload, punch through walls in frustration and pay a psychiatrist a visit or two.
>But what's my party and alignment?
>alignment
Having witnessed half the village's worth of his people killed and most of the village itself burnt to the ground during an orc raid at an early age, Joe resolved to become a skilled warrior and enact vengeance upon the greenskin marauders, whom he came to view only as filthy savages and irredeemable evil in the grand scheme of things.
Despite the obvious difficulties stemming from the lack of pure physical strength and durability, as well as the scarcity of seasoned veterans in Candlekeep, Joe's persistence bore fruit: he used agility and wits where his stature and raw muscle strength were not enough. Albeit this steadfast determination came at the cost of him becoming stern and reticent, thanks to the now cooled but not in any way diminished hatred towards those who unknowingly set him upon this path. But even that shortcoming he managed to turn partially to his advantage, concealing it behind a joyful, light-hearted facade most naively expect from a gnome.
Tl;dr: a collected, calculating LN fighter with carefully hidden social adaptation problems who hates orcs/goblinoids in general. Since the only way for you to get favoured enemies in a 2ed-based CRPG would be to go Ranger, just leave it as fluff to avoid limiting your options too much (I don't remember if Rangers were any good in BG1).
Replace "Joe" with "Jill" if you want. And then replace whichever remains with a better name, that is.
>Also, I'll probably run it with TuTu if you want to suggest BG2's riced fighter kits.
Some specialized fighter then, maybe Kensai. Although something on the wilder, less organised side would be interesting as well. Swashbucklers suck though, as far as I can remember.

The original Quake was a yearly pilgrimage for awhile, until I was beating it on Nightmare pretty handily and things got too familiar. I'd give it another go, since it's been a few years, but dosbox keeps fucking segfaulting and I don't feel like debugging it.
Deus Ex was another. There's always another self-imposed challenge to run. Ghosting, non-lethal only, melee only, crowbar only, no skills, no augs. Or maybe better: intentionally pick the shittier option for each aug canister. Really see how far run silent and energy shield get you.
I never tried an "explosives only" run. You can avoid confrontations, but you can only dispatch people with rockets, TNT crates, grenades, etc.
