>I think paywalling 'art' in general is abhorrent
Bad take. There are good ways and bad ways to do paywalls
Good ways to do paywalls:
1.) Merchandise: packs or comics specifically made to sell, fine as long as you're also putting out other free art
2.) Early access: letting people see new art long before it goes public (but it will eventually go public). Should be worth saying that it shouldn't be a massive delay - some artists advertise "early access" when they've been keeping art behind the paywall for literal years, it's especially bad when the artist doesn't put out much content in general.
3.) Premium/Bonus Content: giving people who pay in the ability to see WIPs, vote on future content, make requests, have members-only streams or recordings, members-only Discord servers, access to high resolution files, and/or the working files.
Bad ways to do paywalls:
- Disappearing behind the paywall, not releasing anything public besides advertisements for your paywall, you're not going to gain a following, you're not going to attract new viewers/customers and you're more likely to get your content pirated.
- Being extremely anti-consumer, witch hunting for "leakers", enacting group punishment on customers
- Selling content sight unseen, without any description of what to expect in terms of subject matter, or how long a comic might be
Faf falls under all of the worst kinds of paywall behaviour.
