Sony an Microsoft are banking on the digital versions of their consoles to sell. both digital and disc consoles can't survive in the same ecosystem. The future of consoles will forever be PC's with branding and this is unironically.

gaming hasn't been good since the snes era. the ps1 was when the problem of modern video games began.

Although, you need a correction: Sega was pushing for dlc and paying for service since the Mega Drive days. They had the Seganet with empty carts that could download digital-only games and demos through their online services directly into the cart for Mega Drive. Golden Axe III and some Phantasy Star visual novels are examples of this. And they had been doing this since 1993.
In short: the industry is cancer and it is always ok to steal from it.
