Shoehorned LGBT shit is like the drug war from the 80s/90s. It's so forced and shitty that over time people just end up despising it. TF2, however, had a memorable roster of colorful characters, except the Pyro who had no real personality prior to the comics and his Meet the Team trailer. The community started joking that the Pyro was secretly a girl since you can never see what he looks like (aside from the old concept art), and Valve just ran with it but never really committed one way or the other and it stuck. So what you have now is a character who has extremely male traits who is also animated like a Woman and is joked about being a guy then being a girl. It naturally became his role instead of being heavily forced like all the other shit, which makes it a lot easier for people to sympathize and even like.
