i used to put hours on games but nowadays all i play in gta. i can't even get into a game without getting bored after 5 minutes. i like gta because of the freedom. is it me or is it the industry not caring anymore?

As you get older you have less tolerance for bullshit. 45 min. cutscene introductions? Fuck that.
I advise arcade-like indie games where you can just jump into action.

that's the thing it's the video gamey part of this medium. i don't see the games made by r* actual games, they're just interactive Hollywood blockbusters and i like them, especially since they're grounded in reality and the whole fantasy part of games i can't take seriously anymore because i'm just too old for that garbage. i exclusively only play the gta games because they're far from childish and i just love role playing as a mass shooter :]

I figured that shit out somewhere in fucking 2014, and people only now started to realize it.
But another thing about getting older you actually get wiser want it or not and your mentality starts demanding better of your hobbies, you won't be able to get satisfied even with the simplest shit.
At that point i switched to books, life is short anyway, better learn some things.

Indeed, after playing for years you realize most games are garbage. I'm always holding out for the few gems here and there, otherwise I do other things.

Getting bored seems like a you issue OP. I get bored working out because it's something I have to do and it's so mind numbing and a timesink. I play video games for fun. Go figure.

What are some books? Not that I ever stopped reading. There's no such thing as switching though. You should always do a variety of things. Switching doesn't seem like it will fix the problem in the long term.

This. Although, I've learned if I grit my teeth hard enough and bear through the shit and get to the meat of the game, then the payoff is totally worth it. Few recent examples:
System Shock 1. The 2 levels of System Shock 1 are fucking terrible. Just blue and red mazes. Once I got past them though I was crack-cocaine addicted. It took a few tries, but man-o-man was it worth it.
System Shock 2. Also had a hard time getting into it, although less than 1 (even though I enjoyed 1 more). I knew it was a game with trap skills and I got really hung up over trying to figure out my build. Once the ball was rolling though I was hooked.
Thief 1 was also like this. I didn't really enjoy it at first, but something about it made me keep coming back. Eventually it became my favorite game. One I replay from time to time.
If it's a gem that people rate 10/10 all over the place and there's evidence it's played a lot then it's probably worth gritting your teeth and getting over the wall.

If you're over 25 all games that you play began to feel like giant waste of time. The only solution is to make patreon and jewtube accounts and start making long format """"critique""""" videos because normies eat that shit up like there's no tommorow. At least that way you'll make some cash from playing games and it won't feel like complete waste of time

My biggest problem is that there are too many things to do on a PC, often can't decide if I want to watch a movie, play video games or do something else entirely. When I really want to enjoy a video game I dust off a console, unplug my computer and don't touch it for a couple of days. I played a bunch of OG Xbox games after my computer died two years ago and it was some of the best fun I ever had playing video games.

I tend to drop games now that force you to watch cutscenes. Even more if it forces you into a tutorial. Tutorials now to beyond hand holding. They lock your character into place and only let you do the commanded action and it pisses me the fuck off. Let me play the fucking game and learn that way. If you're gonna have a tutorial don't force me to sit there for an hour just to learn how to look up and down

Try playing shorter, more unique games if the regular stuff bores you. I've played so many JPRGs that they all seem the same to me now unless the storyline is really good and/or the battle system is something I haven't experienced before.

I was like that for a while, what made me snap out of it was playing an old favourite. Ape escape, Skies of arcadia, FF7, ect. Made me rexperience what made me fall in love with video games. Currently playing resident evil 1 for the first time, gotten to the part after the plant boss and finally meet Wesker again. I intend to also play games 2 and 3.

Pretty much. This is alleviated a bit if you explore new genres or play games that require some thinking and skill. I used to mainly play RPGs and FPS as teenager, but now I gravitate towards strategy, stealth, and cuhrayzee stuff.
I am a drawfag, so sometimes I will play games for artstyle and atmosphere alone. For some reason games are better than most mediums at inspiring and motivating me to work on something. They are not as good as books, but much better than movies, animation, or music.
>>16940927
Thief 1 hooks you in with its excellent atmosphere alone. Gameplay is good too, although it has some jankyness. Luckily crappy aspects that hinder and benefit you balance each other out for the most part. Once you get through the thieve's guild mission the game becomes far more interesting.

It's extra frustrating when learning the game is actually the most fun part of games to begin with. When you don't know how things work, that's the most mysterious and fun part. When the game is shallow to begin with it's like someone telling you how to beat a solved game. The only thing left after that is going through the motions.
