That image is a poor example. Gordon Freeman's iconic feature is his crowbar at this point. Or maybe his HEV suit. Nobody gives a fuck about his glasses. Mario's iconic feature is debatably his hat.
Most iconic features become iconic after the first game. They aren't decided upon by the designers during pre-production. Therefore you could replace just about all of them with something similar, or in some cases nothing at all, and the game wouldn't really suffer for it. For example, the crowbar could have been replaced with the pipe wrench you get in Opposing Force. I would say the HEV suit is tougher though, because you need something that makes Gordon stand out from the rest of the throwaway scientists.

Yeah, come to think of it, OG Kratos in GoW3 automatically smashes an innocent civilian's head against a wall as they were fleeing from a burning building, for no real reason other than just to be edgy.
