I kind of had that same situation with the PS2 where I didn't have a memory card for it. I think it was my first time getting the console and I didn't know that the box didn't include a memory card for it. Got impatient and just played Final Fantasy X all the way without much trouble until the Seymour Flux boss fight and lost there. Had to replay the game all the way over again and beat it once I got the memory card the next day. Yes, I played all the way through it without much sleep only to die to that bitch-ass boss.
I kind of miss memory cards because you can take them out and use them when you need it instead of having it stored on the console. You can store saves online at this point in the PS3 but I didn't trust Sony after the Playstation hack incident so I never bothered to make an account to give my credit information to them. If I wanted to buy a game that is online purchase only, I'd buy the credits from the store to use instead. I guess you can use external hard drives instead but I'd like something that was uniquely designed to work with the console that is usable instead of it being stacked with my other digital hoarded collection.

I agree with everything else, but this one is sub-optimal. The best is when games have a "hard and soft" save system.
<You can make a soft save but if you die, you go back to your last hard save, so you can still quit and take a break at any point in the game
Too many times I progressed past a save point just to realize the world or dungeon or whatever is not ending anytime soon but I made too much progress to just wipe it. A lot of times I just pause the game and leave it running while I go do something else for a while and come back later.

Do you manually save/loadstate, or is it automated when you load/exit a game? I'm usually paranoid about accidentally loading a state and losing progress, but that sounds pretty comfy if automated. Would be great for NES games.

That's what I've been doing for a decade plus now, and not just in regards to games. I do the same with movies, books, and television shows. I have a nice, comfy library of DVDs/games that I can put on, play/watch for a bit, and then go do something else with my time. I haven't bought a new console, I haven't bought any new games, I haven't subscribed to Netflix, I haven't done anything but sit back and enjoy a lifetime's supply of entertainment. There are plenty of good games that come out nowadays, they just aren't AAA shit. I'll recommend some if you're seriously struggling to find new, good games. Broaden your horizons. There is also thousands of old PC games to play and thousands of old console games to emulate, and emulation is better than ever.
This is actually the new golden age of video games so long as you ignore AAA shit and don't use consoles. You can get a solid ryzen CPU for as cheap as 85 dollars, you can get a used Navi card and install linux where the drivers are actually good and have thousands of games to play on a budget build.

I'm actually starting to agree. We hit a real dark age somewhere from the mid-00's to the early 10's, but we're not in too bad of a place now. Dark Souls showed there was a still a market for games that provide challenge and spawned a whole sub-genre, niche Japanese games like Yakuza are now actually seeing regular Western releases, we have much better mechanisms for the distribution of indie games, allowing for some really great games like Hollow Knight to appear out of nowhere, and if all you want to do is play old games that's easier and better than ever too. Basically, AAA gaming is a pile of shit, and the gaming media sucks, but that may have always been the case.

Another good example is Freekstyle. Both of these games are fine-tuned to the limitations of the original hardware, thus riddled with game-breaking glitches that shouldn't be there, and unplayable until "very" further notice.

It's not that "state of the art" when you need a new high-range PC/Laptop for it anyway (preferably with a dedicated GPU). I always wondered why Vulkan does not work on my Laptop, until I found out that it's "too weak".

I tried every possible way to install Vulkan on it, but it just isn't compatible with an Intel i5 4200M (no GPU).
Lucky you I guess, but I think a contributing factor is that it's GPU focused, meaning no matter how weak the PC is, it has to have a dedicated GPU to work.

I kind of hated PS1 - PS2 era of gaming and it wasn't because of games, games were great and all. I hated it because of those machines, nothing fucking worked. PS1 era especially, I remember praying every time I would boot up game because in 60% of cases it wouldn't read CD, and for no reason, too, didn't matter if it was brand new game or older, there was always risk of PS randomly deciding not to start game. This was happening to me even after I bought new PS1. PS2 I believe I've switched at least 3 times because of that cheap, Japanese trash of a laser that would die after 6-7 months of use. Even at the time, as a kid, I was thinking to myself just how gigantic pieces of garbage those consoles are. PS3 I bought once and it lasted me until PS4, same with PS4. When it comes to games, things have definitely gotten worse because, as anons here said, games went mainstream so they began to dumb them down so that everyone "gets it". Not that games from previous generations were intelligent or some shit, it's just that previous games required a bit of paying attention, which now days doesn't exist. Rarely will you find game today that requires and kind of attention, and if devs try to make something that does require attention, it is usually meet with cry's from jurnos and casuals how it's too difficult (Think of anything that From Software is doing). Also, I think that devs should re-think the way they implement difficult levels in games because what we got today is fucking retarded. If you start playing something on highest difficult it just means that you take more damage, and enemies heave bigger health bar, meanwhile game still forces you to walk during "important" moments of the story because presenting game in a "cinematic" way is more important then letting people play. This problem of trying to make games as close to movies as possible is most apparent if you observe devs reactions to someone play or speedrun their games. They are completely shocked when they see that players are skipping cutscenes, or have find a way to skip some walking part in game. This people are not gamers, they don't play games, they only make them. Basically, majority of people who are making games today do not understand what games are at its core.
