The difficulty of those threats varies though, it's easier to survive in a warm climate than it is in a cold climate. It's harder to survive on the desert than it is in a forest. And that's not the only factor, there are also different resources that one can use to develop themselves keep in mind, resources needed to develop a civilization vary depending on technological level of that civilization. Keep in mind, there were no horses in North America until Europeans brought them there or anything actually similar to a horse. Horses are incredibly fucking helpful for building a civilization, when you can throw a lot of the work you need to do yourself on them. So even if a civilization arises, that doesn't mean that it has the resources necessary to actually develop past a certain point. You not only have to be lucky to be forced to advance beyond a certain point, you also have to be lucky to have right resources to actually do that.

In the end Civilizations and societies are systems of dividing labour. A society which doesn't have to put much labour into surviving, will not think of novel ways to lower the amount of labour necessary. If a civilization needs to put much labour into surviving, they will naturally look for a way to lower the labour necessary for survival. This is one of the reasons why slavery existed not considering sexual slavery

This doesn't mean that they will have the means to.

If they don't have animals to push labour on, they have to rely on other means which are not always as good. One of the reason why Europe even advanced beyond the medieval ages was because of the black death. I never said that genetics do not play a role, nor that everyone has equal chances. Alphabets were generally non-standardised prior to the Latin alphabet and Cyrillic, but they existed and were used fairly frequently.
