I barely even see any games of worth at yard sales where I am. Usually just shovelware, licensed shit, shooters, common shit every has, etc. And generally no older than sixth gen. On rare occasion someone might actually have something decent, but it's rarer still for it to be a good price (considering I've found people selling games at market value despite the fact that "we couldn't find any buyers on ebay" is their logic for doing so). I think a lot of people are just aware these days that older games, especially ones for Nintendo systems, can be worth decent money, so they're more apt to sell them elsewhere, leaving mostly dregs behind that aren't worth the effort but they still want taken off their hands. Of course, yard sales are a crapshoot in general if you actually want stuff to work, unless they can prove it before selling it to you.
You could consider trawling yard sale listings on craigslist or your local equivalent and either search within that section for posts with "video games", but I'd stay out of the direct "For sale: video games" section. Too many people aware of what stuff is worth from what I've seen (even when they're not local brick and mortar using it advertise), to the point I have to question why someone's trying to sell an incomplete game for $200 cash amidst just his local market. Just strikes me that his net's too thin to warrant it.
In general though, yard sales, as well as thrift stores, goodwills, pawnshops, etc where I am are just plain shit when it comes to looking for vidya. Either people here are too smart to dump their good shit there when they could get more money elsewhere, and just use those places as a dumping ground for shit that wouldn't be worth the effort of selling/that other stores here won't take, or there's roaming scalpers that buy up anything of interest for resell.

Might add though with luck and persistence, you might still be able to at least find a system cheaply at a yard sale. I found a tub with an NES, SNES, and N64 in it at one last year. Seller wanted twenty dollars, talked him down to ten in case they didn't work. The NES sure didn't, but the other two did (SNES required buying cables for though). But regardless, it's a massive crapshoot, and almost certainly going to be purely dependent on luck if wasting that much gas looking each weekend for a cheap N64 is going to still come out cheaper than buying an eventual one at average price and only having to make one trip/pay for shipping.
>>15796038
Goodwill has had the additional issue that, at least a few years back, they had opened an east coast electronics and media focused store, and had shipped a lot of actually good stuff there as sales fodder. And they charged market price as well from photos I'd seen online (like Twilight Princess GC for $70 at the time). I will say though that I have rather decent luck every so often with a local multimedia chain. They have had a noticeable tendency to fuck up prices in either direction, asking more than average for certain games and less for others. Far, far more, and far, far less in some cases, and I've been able to find some games of interest I'd written off playing outside of emulation or modded systems there for fucking cheap compared to what they tend to be. But as mentioned earlier, it really doesn't extend to prior than sixth gen at this point, nor even to systems. For all the times the staff taking stuff in seem to not really know what they're getting in, games for older systems, if they're not shovelware/licensed/SPOATS, tend to be going rate, because "if it's old, it's worth gold" mindset, and the areas devoted to each are quite small, probably because they still get what comes in for them moved out fairly fast, especially popular titles. I have never found what I'd consider a great deal on NES, SNES, or N64 there.

It really depends on the area. There's some stores in the towns around mine that aren't too bad, some that really are and that I have no clue how they stay open, and ones that go either direction unreliably on a given trip. The fact that there's actually local options here that aren't just Gamestop probably act as some degree of check on each other. Can't say the same for other towns I've been through. Stopped in at a game store in Sparks, Nevada while on a road trip last year or so, and fucking hell, their prices made even the worst I see here look tamer. Like, $40 minimum for what goes for $20 here in the same or better condition. And while obviously I didn't bring that up to the employees, talking with a local, they said that those sort of prices weren't just average, they were actually rather good for the area. I mentioned them asking twice what things go for back home for me, and got a reply of "I guess your town doesn't have much interest in games." Which is absolutely incorrect in my experiences.
I don't know if they had a local monopoly there or what. The town my dad lives in had only one remotely closeby store that sold anything older than directly past gen, and as such they charged prices much above what they are where I live. Next time I came to visit, the store was gone; something about the mall it was in remodeling and not considering that sort of store to fit the image they wanted. While I could say "good riddance" considering their prices, the next nearest non-Gamestop game store is a solid 45 minutes away from there by freeway some towns to the northwest, leaving only pawn shops and pickers for older vidya. I am damn glad I've got a CFWed PS3 and Wii over there for when I visit, because there's nothing to really be found at good prices there anymore if Gamestop and the like don't carry it directly.
>They have atari 2600 games going for $20 and nes games like the original LoZ for fucking $60.
Absolutely ridiculous. I think Zelda's about $20-30 here (still pretty bad, considering it's common as fuck, but that's Nintendo tax), but Atari never gets remotely that high. Some stores don't even seem to take it, other prices them really low because they just eat up shelf space. I have to question if that store that popped up where you are is the only local option, in which case I can see them trying their luck. I live in a town clustered by other towns, and directly within my town, there's only a single non Gamestop vidya focused store, and for a while they were asking absolutely stupid prices on everything, right down to the soda they kept in a fridge ($3 for a can when the Circle K down the road has 40oz and ice for under a dollar, what the fuck). I still don't go to them much, but they seem to have at least come down to "competitive", and in some cases honestly have aren't bad ($15 for Otogi last I went; considering getting that for a friend if he still has his Xbox HUEG around). But Gamestop some years back really did a number here, to the point there were 10 or 11 of them in a five mile radius choking every other game store out of business. Part of why I started delving into the surrounding towns since the whole area's gridlocked.

I loved the shit out of that game when I was young. I rented it so often the guy at the video told me to just buy it. I could never find a retail copy though.

I remember thinking pic related was incredible back in the day, but I don't know if it's aged well.

Nigger, you have to be hard fucking pressed to try and prove to anyone that the N64 is worse than the fucking 3D0, 32x, Jaguar, N-Gage, etc just because you played a game with missed potential.

>N64 doesn't have hidden gems. Its library was too small and 3rd parties never cared.

The mom and pop stores are nearly as bad as gamestop yeah. The local chains around my city are just as overpriced and give you nearly as bad trade in/cash for old games.
>atari 2600 games going for $20
The most I would ever pay for a 2600 game is $10. There is a very limited collectors market. 90% of the library of 2600 is unplayable trash and the people who grew up playing 2600 are like 50 now and not collecting. There is maybe 20 games worth playing for the system TOPS.
