The books were -at least the first and a short story I read- about the difficulty of reintegrating a Commando after losing the rest of the squad, and the curious but annoying idea of squad/instructor/platoon confined cultures developing out of clones since their sameness coupled with identical/similar training made them, to their perception, very different from each other; also because given their biological necessities they must probably have their sleep and rest quantified as much as their duties.
Thinking about it you made me realize they really were faggots tough, since their whole lives are training and fine-tuning combat should have been borderline liberating, instead they act anal as fuck. It's weird these particular books were handed to a woman since what they should have been was basically 'Star Wars: Rogue Warrior' with a clone squad focus.

KT was in the military and worked with the military for quite a while actually so she has a very good idea of such things, it's why she was able to write them so well she served and she understood. Republic commando is still by far my favorite SW series and I'll never forgive lucas for screwing her and making sure the series was never finished

M8, we dislike Traviss for only writing one book worth a damn (Hard Contact), making the Mandos and Spartans her pets, and in general for the rapidly declined writing quality.

I think Hard Contact worked because it was still Star Wars/Science Fiction but with a tactical emphasis, whereas the book after it just felt like some counterterrorism novel set on Earth with a Star Wars paint job. My guess is that Karen has a hard time distancing her lived experiences from her writing, which ends up fucking the story over.

Ouch, I hadn't noticed that one.
Although I've never strongly adhered to 'x'-illions with Star Wars, since everything of that nature has always varied wildly from source to source, so it doesn't irritate me as much as it disappoints me with Traviss.

Probably for the best, Star Wars energy/troop/whatever values can make even 40k look tame by comparison. At one point, someone did a calculation for the output values for turbolasers given by one of the guidebooks, and estimated that everyone participating in the Battle of Coruscant should have had their retinas seared by ambient radiation alone coming from all the turbolaser shots.

That's not KT's fault IIRC. That number was from supplementary AOTC material. It was also repeated in Legacy of Evil. Same with the Quadrillions figure Atin and one of the Null Arcs discuss while sabotaging a droid factory.
Full disclaimer: I really like the Republic Commando series. It's one of the few SW EU books that actually reads like actual soldiers interacting.
Not a big fan of her Halo stuff, but the only positive thing 343i ever contributed to the series was the Zero Bloom TU for Reach, so that's par for the course.
I like her Gears stuff too.

Couldn't find it, but I did find somebody autistically breaking down the asteroid vaporization scene in TESB. He found a single turbolaser shot to be -at minimum- four times the power of the Hiroshima bomb, and at maximum, 31,000 terrajoules per shot. It's a good read and I lol'd more than you would think for a research paper; he starts measuring in coronal mass ejections in one section.

Aside from a few really cringeworthy comics riddled with pretentious smugness, I find KT's work to be acceptable. Not one of the better authors but I've definitely grown to appreciate how passionate she was about the Mandalorians, even though she did turn them into some kind of weird self-insert tribe for what she always wanted for her own self-made army, but still good for the most part.

She also didn't hold back when George made changes to them in CW. She was like an alpha-tumblrite author except unlike the worthless shits nowadays, she genuinely loved the story, lore and characters, and put that first above her own personal views which took a back seat to how much she loved the Mandos. Hell, I didn't like her back then, but I guess the last half-a-decade with Disney has made me appreciate her and all the lore she set up for them, because honestly it really was in-depth as fuck. Society, planet, lore, code, religion, philosophy, education, technology, history, tactics, she covered every single base with these fucks and it shows that she really fucking loved them. Genuine love for your creations and the world you have made for them is something that is sorely missing among the western world's writers in this day and age. Meanwhile Japan stills has fucks who do just that.

Mostly EU but Traviss is usually a divisive subject for most anons here. But she seems to be gaining more favor around here, and I'm doing my part to warm everyone up to her. I haven't read anything recently but I'm waiting for my copy of the Star Wars Galactic Phrase Book to arrive so I can post the contents on here. Last book I read was The Shattered Peace a couple of months back. Disney can go suck mouse cock for all I care.

That's cool I also ended up going through the whole jedi apprentice series last year even though I wasn't initially planning on checking out YA stuff. I flew through literally every single post-bane pre-tpm books as a means of getting into that prequel era vibe before I started reading Plagueis. Replayed some of the TPM games like Episode I Racer and Starfighter. Was suprised to see the sequel for Starfighter actually reference the Jedi Apprentice/jedi quest series and random eu shit. Star Wars Bounty Hunter is good too and ties into Maul: Lockdown with the Bando Gora.
Found this in a text tile.. a chronologically ordered quick post-bane pre-tpm starter pack for anyone in a TPM mood: (books only, no comics)
Jedi Apprentice series + Legacy & Secrets of the Jedi (Jude Watson)
The Wrath of Darth Maul (Ryder Windham)
Darth Maul: Retraint (James Luceno)
Darth Maul: Saboteur (James Luceno)
The Syrox Redemption (Joe Schreiber) [this is better to read after Lockdown]
Darth Maul: Lockdown (Joe Schreiber)
Cloak of Deception (James Luceno)
Episode I Adventures #1-#12 (Ryder Windham, Dave Wolverton)
Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter (Michael Reaves)
The Tenebrous Way (Matthew Stover)
Darth Plagueis (James Luceno)
Darth Maul: End game (James Luceno)
The Phantom Menace (Terry Brooks)
Deep Spoilers (Ryder Windham)
The Monster (Daniel Wallace)
The Starfighter Trap (Steve Miller)
Darth Maul Restraint and Wrath of Darth Maul go hand in hand. There's basically a rough draft of Restraint in "Warth of Maul" borrowed from Luceno and it has an ending, whereas the Restraint short story cuts off, but is more detailed. If you integrate comics in there (like the prequel comic for jedi apprentice) you could have a pretty good primer for TPM.
Anyway I think I went through all that sometime last year and stopped reading midway through the Terry Brooks TPM novelization after being distracted by something else. I'll probably have to finish it and get into Jedi Quest or whatever.
nice to see an uncucked place for star wars discussion. I already managed to get banned from the jedi council forums, but that place was boring anyway.

it probably doesn't matter THAT much, but Plagueis does reference a shitload of stuff (books, comics etc) so you get more enjoyment out of it if you're at least familar with the Darth Maul books and short stories, as well as Cloak of Deception. However, now that you've already read Plagueis, you've essentially ruined/spoiled Cloak of Deception and I suppose the Maul books as well.

I've never read in any particular order. I only started reading SW books a couple of months ago after some anons here introduced me to some Dooku comics and Labyrinth of Evil since I mostly just wanted to read stuff on Dooku. Since then I read Heir to the Empire and Yoda: Dark Rendezvous. I've been thinking of starting from the bottom up with Splinter of the Mind's Eye. Any thoughts?

What I like to do is read in eras or chunks and have a somewhat systematic approach to it. So for example if I wanted to get into /Bane/, I'd probably want to have the full history of the sith era behind me (tales of the jedi comics, kotor etc) for max vibes. This way I also have a clear idea of where I'm going so I don't get bored or lost. I typically pirate the ebooks, put them on a tablet and make a logical reading list for myself. http://www.starwarstimeline.net/ has been pretty useful for this sort of thing. I kind of use it as reference, I don't take it literally (like splitting book into chapers) but it is useful to see if you may have missed something. (Like an obscure short story etc). One thing I have also noticed, is that generally speaking, the books might reference the comics, but not the otherway around. I'm not sure if this is a prequel-era thing or what.
Splinter of the Mind's Eye is fairly standalone I think? Not sure. I have to read it too at somepoint (only got interested in EU stuff late 2016). I heard the Brian Daley Han Solo novels from that time period feel a lot more modern.
